The Ultimate Okinawa Packing List: What to Pack With Free Downloadable Checklist

Packing for Okinawa is very different to packing for the rest of Japan. Which made things tricky for us, because we were visiting Okinawa as part of a wider Japan trip! If you’re in the same boat, I’ve put together the ultimate Okinawa packing list to help you.

While most first-time visitors picture Tokyo’s bright lights or Kyoto’s temples, Okinawa is a completely different proposition. Okinawa feels much more like a tropical island than the Japan you might be expecting. We spent a month in Japan and five nights in Okinawa, so that we could swap city walks for beaches, snorkelling and coastal drives. And for this laid-back experience, we needed a whole different suitcase!

Tried-and-Tested Okinawa Packing Tips

Pack Lightweight Clothes

Unlike Tokyo or Kyoto, Okinawa is hot, humid, and tropical for almost all of the year. We visited Okinawa in April so that we could avoid the unbearable humidity of the summer months, and it was still hot, hot, hot!

We lived in:

  • Shorts
  • Cotton T-shirts
  • Linen dresses

My advice would be to avoid heavy fabrics wherever possible, and stick to cotton, linen, and other breathable fabrics. If you don’t have anything suitable, try buying supplies from Uniqlo when you arrive: Their Airism range is made of moisture-wicking fabrics that are perfect for hot climates, and look stylish too.

Bring More Swimwear Than You Think

We took two sets of swimwear each, and even that wasn’t really enough. I would have loved to have a third set too! Why? Because between swimming at the beach all day and in the hotel pool every evening, I never had a chance to get anything dry.

Our hotel room didn’t have a balcony, which meant I was trying to dry half a dozen sets of swimwear in the bathroom every night, and most mornings we were putting on slightly damp swimmers to head off for our day’s adventures. I would have really appreciated having a third set each, to make the swimwear logistics a little less complicated!

Don’t Forget Water Shoes

This is something most Okinawa packing lists miss, but it’s actually one of the most essential things you can bring if you plan to spend a lot of time at the beach. Many of the beaches in Okinawa are beautiful soft sand, but many have rough rocky shorelines, sharp coral fragments in the water, and you could even encounter dangerous marine life (like venomous stone fish) in the water too. Thick soled water shoes will protect you from all of this.

They might not look stylish, but here is a link to the exact shoes we were all wearing. They were also handy on the sand, which got super-hot as the day went on, and protected our feet from burning.

If you’re planning a boat trip or snorkelling trip, packing water shoes becomes particularly essential. And I definitely recommend taking a tour on the water if you have time in your schedule, it’s the best way to explore Okinawa from a brand new perspective.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Sunscreen is an absolute given for any trip to Okinawa, no matter what time of year you choose to visit. Okinawa’s sun is much stronger than most visitors expect. For that reason you should definitely pack:

If you can, opt for reef-safe sunscreen, especially if you’re planning to go snorkelling or scuba diving. This is the best way you can help to preserve the coral reefs for future generations, and many snorkelling tours will insist that you use this before you can enter the water.

A Waterproof Phone Pouch

This was one of our most useful purchases for our whole trip, and I know won’t go on a beach holiday without it! A waterproof phone pouch allowed me to take photos of the kids playing in the water without risking damaging my phone. We now use this for beach trips, boating, and paddle boarding.

Rash Vests

For us, packing rash vests was an absolute essential, especially for the boys. You’ll notice their rarely pictured on the beach in Okinawa without them on! The Okinawan sun is hot, and it’s so easy to burn in a relatively short amount of time.

Not only do rash vests protect the skin, they also reduce how often you need to apply sunscreen on your whole body, which my boys love, because it means i’m not constantly interrupting their play time too!

Mosquito Repellent

If you’re spending evenings outdoors or exploring parks, mosquito repellent is worth packing. My skin seems to be particularly tasty to mosquitos and I was still bitten (I always am!) but having the repellent with us definitely helped to minimise the number of bites we all received.

Leave Space For Shopping

Okinawa definitely isn’t the famous shopping haven of Tokyo, but you’re still going to want to save some room in your suitcase for shopping and souvenirs. We came home with exclusive plushies from the Okinawa Pokemon Center, Blue Seal ice cream t-shirts, and I even managed to do a little second-hand shopping and get not one but two new handbags.

Try not to arrive with overstuffed suitcases, so that you don’t have to say no to every souvenir the kids want to pick up!

What We Packed But Didn’t Need

Before we landed in Okinawa, we had spent time on the Japanese mainland exploring Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara. That means that our packing had to work for several different destinations, but we definitely ended up with a lot of things in our suitcase that we didn’t need for Okinawa!

You won’t need:

  • Too many clothes. Hotels provide washing machines and laundry services.
  • Extra jumpers. Not one of us put on a single jumper the whole time we were in Okinawa.
  • Loads of snacks. Just like on the Japanese mainland, there’s a konbini in every corner in Okinawa, and my boys were all too happy to buy snacks in all of them! We definitely didn’t need to bring snacks with us.
  • Bulky toiletries. We didn’t stay in a single hotel in Japan, including in Okinawa, that didn’t provide toiletries. Bringing our own would have been a waste of time and precious luggage space.

Final Thoughts and Further Reading

Before our trip, I spent far too long worrying about what we should pack. Looking back, I wish someone had simply told me to pack light, bring plenty of swimwear, and don’t forget your water shoes. Hopefully this guide means you can spend less time worrying about your suitcase, and more time looking forward to Okinawa’s incredible beaches.

Packing for Okinawa is very different to packing for other parts of Japan. That’s why you’ll need a unique packing list. But don’t let that put you off visiting. We loved every minute of exploring this unique and lesser-visited part of Japan, and we’re already planning to return on our next visit! If you have time, it’s well-worth adding Okinawa to your Japan itinerary.
