Where to Stay in Okinawa with Kids: Naha vs Beach Resorts (2026 Guide)

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning a trip to Okinawa is where to stay in Okinawa with kids, and this was something we really agonised over before our visit, because I know how much choosing the right hotel and the right location in Okinawa can completely shape your experience.

We looked at dozens of different hotels before our trip, with either the biggest city of Naha or the beach resorts of the west coast being our two main options. We were almost paralysed with indecision: should we stay in the city for its convenience and its fun, bustling atmosphere? Or would heading out of the city and to the beach for a relaxed, resort-feel be the best option.

Where to Stay in Okinawa with Kids Naha vs Beach Resorts (2026 Guide)

In the end we opted to stay in the main city of Naha. And After visiting Okinawa as a family, exploring several different parts of the island, and getting to know the island a little better, my honest answer is:

👉 There’s no one “best” place to stay in Okinawa. It just depends on the kind of trip you want.

In this guide, I’ll break down the main areas to choose from, who they’re best for, and i’ll give you a rundown of the exact hotel we chose, where we stayed, and why. Here’s everything you’ll need to know to decide where to stay in Okinawa with kids.

The Main Areas to Stay in Okinawa

I am aware that Okinawa is more than just one island. In fact, Okinawa is an archipelago comprised of around 160 islands, and of these islands 47-49 are considered to be inhabited. But for the purpose of this article, when I talk about Okinawa, i’m talking about the main island. This is where most first time visitors choose to stay, and where I recommend you stay if you’re taking your first trip to Okinawa.

For most families when it comes to choosing where to stay in Okinawa with kids, it comes down to three options:

  • Naha (the main city and also where the airport on the main island is located)
  • Onna /West Coast (This is where most of the luxury/most well established beach resorts are)
  • Northern Okinawa (Near the aquarium and the beautiful Emerald Beach)

We visited all three of these locations on our trip to Okinawa, and we discovered that each offers a very different experience.

Staying in Naha (Best for Convenience)

Spoiler alert: We chose to stay in Naha, and we felt this was the right choice for our first visit. Naha is Okinawa’s main city and where you’ll find the airport, and a wide range of hotels. If you’re used to using the metro on mainland Japan, then this feels a little more familiar, because it’s the only part of the island that has a monorail system (the only public transport on the rest of the island is a bus system).

Exploring Naha in Okinawa, Japan

Staying In Naha Is The Best Choice For:

  • Short stays (the airport is conveniently close to the city)
  • Your first or last night stays if you want to stay in the city and in a beach resort
  • You don’t want to hire a care during your time in Okinawa
  • You want to stay in the part of the island with the easiest transportation options

The main PROS of staying in Naha is just how close it is to the airport, the abundance of restaurants and shops here, and how easy it is to get around without a car. If you like the idea of having a walk along ‘the strip’ at night, or if you’re looking for nightlife, or to try a different restaurant every night then this is the place to be.

At the other end of the spectrum, the main CONS of staying in Naha are that they’re further from the most beautiful beaches (there is only one small swimming beach in Naha), meaning you’ll get less of a resort feel. Naha also offers less of a ‘relaxing break’ feel than staying outside of the city.

Where We Stayed: Okinawa Hinode Hotel & Hot Springs

We stayed at Okinawa Hinode Hotel & Hot Springs, and I honestly cannot say enough positive superlatives about this hotel. It worked brilliantly for our family, and came with an abundance of added extras: which is one of the main reasons we chose it.

Why we chose the Okinawa Hinode Hotel & Hot Springs

When we initially chose the Okinawa Honode Hotel and Hot Springs, we chose it for pretty practical reasons. We wanted somewhere:

  • Convenient. The hotel is close to the airport (around a 10 minute drive in a taxi) and right next to a monorail stop, so you could get public transport from the airport with ease.
  • Easy with kids. The hotel has a pool with a small slide (perfect for the kids to play) and offers free ice cream from 10am until 8pm every day: something that’s like catnip to my kids! they also offer on site activities for kids/families to enjoy twice daily.
  • Comfortable but good value. We couldn’t believe how cheap this hotel was, particularly given the free ice cream, buffet breakfast included AND free drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) from the self-service bar. We like to be out and about, but you could have stayed here the whole time: we met a family that were doing just that!

But away from these practical details, we ended up falling in love with this hotel. The real highlight were the on-site outdoor hot springs, heated to 31 degrees. We’re a family of 4 and I have 2 boys, so in conventional hot springs/onsens I have to go in alone as they’re separated by gender. Here the hot springs were outside and you had to wear swimwear inside, so we could all go in together. It was a real treat! As they were open until 10pm, we went in every night. It was the perfect way to relax after a long day of exploring.

It was the kind of hotel that made everything simple, which is exactly what you want when travelling with kids.

The Drawbacks of Choosing This Hotel

There’s no such thing as the perfect hotel, and I always try to be honest with you guys. And the main drawback of this hotel really is something they can’t control: their city location. There is no beach access or beach nearby (the swimming beach in Naha is either a 30 minute walk or a taxi ride away). This is true of most hotels in Naha, but we love the beach, so it’s definitely something we might consider next time.

For this reason, I think the Okinawa Hinode Hotel is an AMAZING choice, but only if you wanted to stay in the city, are spending a shorter stay on the island, or want somewhere to stay in Naha as part of a wider Okinawa trip.

👉If you’re planning to explore Okinawa more widely, this hotel works really well as a starting point. And with rooms starting from £60 we couldn’t recommend the quality for price more!

Onna & West Coast (Best for Beach Resorts)

If you’re picturing Okinawa as a beach destination, with those perfect white sand beaches and clear blue waters, then you’re probably thinking of Onna and the West Coast. We actually spent a lot of time here during our stay, because the beaches here are just so beautiful. Although we stayed in Naha, we rented a car so that the whole island was our oyster!

Sunset Beach in Okinawa, Japan

This area is known for:

  • resort hotels with ocean views and huge swimming pools
  • beautiful beaches (the beaches here are some of the best on the island)
  • family-friendly facilities such as play areas, water sports, and even water parks

It is worth noting that if you do choose to stay in Onna, you’ll usually need a car if you want to get out and explore. And there are much less choices for restaurants, shops, and bars (outside of your hotel or resort) if you stay in this part of the island too.

Family-Friendly Hotels in Onna, Okinawa

If we hadn’t made the decision to stay in Naha, we would have stayed in Onna. In fact, when we visited Onna, we saw some of the hotels that we had considered as part of our adventures It’s home to a whole cluster of beautiful, stylish looking resort hotels. These are the most popular options for families, and the ones we looked at ourselves:

Rizzan Sea Park Hotel Tancha Bay

This is a large, family-friendly resort with a wide beachfront location. So super convenient if you’re travelling with kids who want to spend as much time on the beach as possible. This hotel is made for families, and has a beautiful swimming pool and even a water park complex on the ocean that my boys would absolutely love.

And it’s affordable too! Depending on when you want to visit and the room type you’re looking at, prices start from £70 per night.

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort

If you don’t mind spending a little more and you’re looking for a more upscale option then you should definitely consider the ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort. This hotel is in such a beautiful setting, and every single room has an ocean view. We saw it from across the bay and immediately said “Wow! We’re staying here next time!”

The pay off is that prices are a little more expensive, starting at £120 per night. But one thing we really noticed was that hotel prices in Okinawa are so affordable, particularly when compared to Tokyo.

HIYORI Ocean Resort Okinawa

This luxurious spa hotel is perfectly positioned as its located within a 5-minute drive of Moon Beach and Tiger Beach. While still a family-friendly hotel, the HIYORI Ocean Resort Hotel is much more high-end than the others on the list. What I liked about this hotel was that it has both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool so the boys would still be able to swim whatever the weather.

💡 These hotels are ideal if you want everything in one place. That resort-style, no need to leave the hotel feel is the main benefit of staying on Okinawa’s west coast.

Do You Need a Car When You Visit Okinawa?

The question I’m asked most above visiting Okinawa is ‘Do you need a car when you visit Okinawa?’ Just like choosing where, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer to this question. Where you stay directly affects the answer to this question.

A good rule of thumb is that:

  • If you’re staying in Naha? → You can manage without one
  • If you’re staying on the west coast or north? → You’ll almost certainly need a car

We actually choose to stay in Naha AND have a car, and I don’t think we could have made a better choice. From our experience, having a car made everything much easier, especially with kids. Check out Do You Need a Car in Okinawa? Our First Hand Experience and Honest Advice (2026) to delve deeper into this question.

Our Recommendation

We fell in loved with Okinawa and we loved staying in Naha. In fact, we loved Okinawa so much that we’re already planning a return trup. And we’ve already decided that when we go back, we will probably:

  • Spend a night or two in Naha (for convenience, and because it’s a very cool, fun city to explore)
  • Then move to a beach resort for the rest of the trip, because our boys are water babies and we all love spending time by the water.

This option gives you the best of both worlds, and I truly think it would be the perfect choice.

Planning Your Okinawa Trip

We’re putting together a whole wealth of information to help you plan your own Okinawa trip with kids. Because it was unexpectedly the best part of our trip, and I think it’s a shame that so few people add Okinawa to their Japan itinerary. Final Thoughts

Where you stay in Okinawa has a big impact on your trip, which is why it’s probably the decision we spent the most time over before we arrived in Japan, but it’s important to know that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

For us, starting in Naha at Okinawa Hinode Hotel & Hot Springs worked perfectly, and it really is a lovely hotel. But if you’re looking for that classic beach holiday feel, you’ll probably want to head further along the coast.

The key is choosing the location that best suits the style of trip you’re planning, and building your itinerary around that.
