American Village Okinawa With Kids: Is It Worth Adding To Your Itinerary?

If you’re planning a family trip to Okinawa, you’ve probably come across Mihama American Village. Located in Chatan, around 30 minutes north of Naha, this colourful entertainment district is one of Okinawa’s most recognisable attractions. But is the American Village Okinawa worth adding to your itinerary if you’re travelling with kids?

This place is like America in a fever dream: in fact, my oldest son said that architecturally it reminded him more of Mexico than America. But it is packed with restaurants, souvenir shops, seaside views and larger-than-life architecture. Right behind the American Village you’ll also find Sunset Beach which is a lifeguarded and netted beach with soft white sand that’s perfect for visiting with kids.

The American Village offers a very different side of Japan from the traditional temples and historic attractions found elsewhere in Okinawa. And it’s a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours if you’re in this part of Okinawa!

We visited as part of our Okinawa road trip and we were surprised by just how family-friendly it was. While it isn’t a full-day attraction, it’s a fun place to spend a few hours shopping, eating and soaking up the atmosphere.

What Is American Village Okinawa?

If you’re not already familiar with it, American Village is a large shopping, dining and entertainment complex located in Chatan on Okinawa’s west coast. It’s a relatively new construction, as the village sits on land originally used as the U.S. military’s Hamby Airfield. This land was returned to Japan in 1981 and the American Village was born.

As you’re driving towards the American Village you’ll notice straight away that it’s built near several US military bases, and the area has developed a distinctive American-inspired atmosphere. There is also a large American presence (we assumed service personnel and their families) eating and shopping here. You’ll find palm trees, colourful buildings, giant signs, American-style diners and plenty of places to shop and eat.

It feels very different from anywhere else we’ve visited in Japan and offers an interesting glimpse into Okinawa’s unique culture and history.

How To Get To Mihama American Village

By Car

We visited by rental car, which is by far the easiest option for most families exploring Okinawa. There are several large parking areas throughout the American Village area, and car parking is free, which was an added bonus. We found the whole thing really straightforward.

If you are driving then the map code of the village (Recommended for Japanese GPS) is: 33 526 360.

From Naha

If you’re staying in Naha and don’t want to hire a car, organised tours and transport options are available.

Many visitors combine American Village with other popular Okinawa attractions as part of a day trip from Naha. The best trip i’ve found combines the Mihama American Village with a visit to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. This was one of the kids favourite Okinawan attractions, and you can read our full review of this here: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Guide (2026): Is It Worth Visiting with Kids?

Is American Village Worth Visiting With Kids?

The American Village isn’t a coventional family-friendly activity. But I think it’s still ll worth visiting with kids, especially if you combine your time here with some playtime on Sunset Beach. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a relaxed afternoon or evening activity.

Our boys were happy exploring the colourful streets, spotting unusual shops and browsing the toy stores and arcades. They found a small Pokemon store, and ate far too many scoops of their favourite Blue Seal ice cream. And we all loved the year-round Christmas shop! What a novelty to spot that in the middle of spring: you can buy tree ornaments made on the islands, which of course we added to our collection.

One of the things we liked most was that there wasn’t any pressure to follow a set route or timetable. It’s simply a fun place to explore at your own pace, popping into shops that look appealing, taking photos in the many photo spots, and eating anything that looked delcious.

Best Things To Do In American Village With Kids

Explore The Colourful Streets

One of the biggest attractions is simply wandering around. Brightly coloured buildings, murals, quirky shops and larger-than-life signs make American Village feel almost like a movie set. It’s also one of the most photogenic locations in Okinawa.

Browse The Shops

American Village is packed with souvenir stores, clothing shops and gift stores selling everything from Okinawan snacks to anime merchandise.

While you’ll definitely find an abundance of mass produced ‘tat’ here there are also some more unique items, like locally made jewellery, the huge Christmas shop, and the boys spent ages going through buckets filled with badges from old American military uniforms.

Older children and teenagers will particularly enjoy browsing the unique stores.

Visit During Sunset

If possible, plan your visit for late afternoon. We didn’t manage this, but it’s definitely on our list for next time! The sunset views over the East China Sea are beautiful, and the area becomes even more atmospheric once the lights come on in the evening.

Grab Dinner

American Village is packed with family-friendly restaurants. We had lunch at Jetta Burger Market, and it was hands-down one of the best burgers I have ever eaten!

As well as American-style burgers, you’ll also find:

  • Pizza restaurants
  • Okinawan cuisine
  • International dining options
  • Cafés and dessert shops

It’s an easy place to find something for even the fussiest eaters. The blend of American and Japanese dishes means there’s definitely something for everyone.

How Long Do You Need At Mihama American Village?

Most families will need between two and four hours to explore the village. But you could easily spend longer if you stop for a meal, enjoy some shopping or visit at sunset.

We spent around 3 hours here, visiting over lunchtime after spending the morning swimming and playing on the Sunset Beach. We then stopped at the American Village to shop, browse, and eat huge American-style burgers before heading off to our next attraction (island hopping to watch the sunset).

I think the American Village works particularly well as a relaxed afternoon stop between sightseeing activities. It’s also a great spot to visit for dinner if you want to watch the sunset from Sunset Beach (this is considered the best place to watch the sun set in Okinawa – the clue is in the name!)

Family Travel Tips

  • Bring your camera! Because the buildings are brightly painted and there are designated photo spots everywhere, this is one of the most photogenic locations in Okinawa
  • Arrive hungry! Allow time for snacks, and don’t have dessert in whatever restaurant you choose – go for a Blue Seal ice cream instead and thank me later!
  • Consider combining your visit to the American Village with nearby beaches or other attractions. Part of what my boys loved so much about the American Village was its proximity to sunset beach!

Final Thoughts and Further Reading

The American Village Okinawa with kids is a fun attraction, and well worth adding to your Okinawa itinerary. It probably isn’t worth travelling to Okinawa solely to see, but if you’re exploring Okinawa for its other attractions then it’s definitely worth visiting, and i’m so glad that we made the detour to see it oursevles.

The colourful atmosphere, family-friendly dining options, ocean views and unique blend of Okinawan and American influences make it one of the most enjoyable places to spend a relaxed afternoon with kids. It’s like a visual representation of Okinawa in a lot of ways: Part Japanese, part American, and uniquely its own.

For families visiting Okinawa, American Village offers something a little different from the island’s beaches, aquariums and historic sites, and that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
