Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Guide (2026): Is It Worth Visiting with Kids?

If you’re planning a trip to Okinawa, there’s one attraction that comes up again and again: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

It’s one of the most famous aquariums in the world because of its biggest resident: the whale shark. There are only four aquariums in the world big enough to house whale sharks. Two of these are in Japan, one in China and one in the USA. And of those four aquariums, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is considered to be the best. After visiting ourselves as a family, I can see exactly why.

This was one of the most exciting, breathtaking aquarium experiences we have ever had. But is it actually worth the time (and money), especially if you’re travelling with kids?

Quick Verdict: Is Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Worth It?

 Yes, especially if you’re visiting Okinawa with kids. If you’re taking kids to Okinawa, this is one of the main attractions you just won’t want to miss.

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of those places that genuinely lives up to the hype, with huge tanks, incredible marine life, and a layout that makes it easy to explore as a family. Most of the attractions are inside, making it great for rainy days, and it also has the benefit of being one of the cheapest attractions in Okinawa (and the cheapest aquarium we’ve ever visited).

If you’re only picking a few key attractions in Okinawa, this should absolutely be one of them.

What is Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium?

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world and is best known for its enormous central tank, home to whale sharks and manta rays. You’ll also find a secondary enormous tank, which is part of the Aquarium’s Shark research centre.

It’s part of the Ocean Expo Park in northern Okinawa, so there’s plenty to explore beyond just the aquarium itself. And outside of the main aquarium building, there are separate buildings that house dolphins, turtles, and manatees. Overall, the aquarium consists of:

• Multiple themed marine zones
• Interactive exhibits
• Huge panoramic viewing tanks
• Plenty of space to move around, even when it’s busy

Visiting The Churaumi Aquarium with Kids: What It’s Really Like

At first, I was reluctant to go to the aquarium: you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all, right? I worried that it was a waste of a precious day in Okinawa. Then the boys and I saw the photos of the main tank, and we knew we had to see it for ourselves! This was one of the best attractions we visited in Okinawa as a family. It’s also one of the easiest to explore with kids of all ages.

What makes it great for kids:

• Wide, spacious walkways, especially in the main tank where ramps take you down to the tank and you can get amazing views at every level (This is so easy to navigate with pushchairs)
• Clear, well-organised layout so it’s easy to know where to go next
• Lots of visual “wow” moments. The main tank with the whale shark and the shark room in particular were the highlights with my boys
• The whole indoor aquarium is air-conditioned (a big win in Okinawa heat)

The main tank is by far the highlight. and it’s one of those rare attractions where both kids and adults are equally impressed. We found somewhere to sit so we could look at the full tank and we stayed there for around half an hour, just marvelling at the scale of the creatures inside. Even if you don’t have time to explore the whole aquarium, please please make the time to see this tank!

The Main Tank (Please Don’t Miss This)

The Kuroshio Sea tank is the standout feature of the aquarium. It’s on every poster, ever leaflet, and every photo you’ll see of the aquarium, for good reason. It’s honestly hard to overstate how impressive it is. When it first opened in 2002, it was the largest aquarium in the world. It holds a frankly incredible 7.5 million litres of water, which now in 2026, makes it one of the top 5 biggest aquariums in the world.

Watching whale sharks glide past while manta rays circle above you is one of those travel moments that really sticks. This has become a core memory for us, something we will never forget.

 If you’re visiting with kids, this is where you’ll likely spend the most time.

Top tip: Head straight to this tank as soon as you arrive! You can go back on yourself to see the smaller exhibits, but because this is the main attraction, it can get busy. The earlier you get here, the quieter it will be. Grab a seat if you can and take a break here, it’s surprisingly relaxing. If you need something to eat, this is where to do it. There is a restaurant in front of the tank, with tables directly in front of the windows.

How Long Do You Need?

We wanted to visit the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium AND the famous Emerald Beach in the same day. The Emerald Beach is also part of the Ocean Expo Park (and a 5 minute walk from the aquarium) so this is the perfect day trip. Having done this trip with kids ourselves, we’d recommend allowing:
 2–3 hours to explore properly

You could rush it faster, but with kids it’s much more enjoyable to take your time. My boys love to read the signs and learn when were travelling: luckily, all of the signs here were in English as well as in Japanese. The shark research centre in particular was a fount of knowledge. They came out knowing so much more about sharks than they did when they went in!

How to Get to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The trickiest thing about visiting the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is actually getting there. The aquarium is located in northern Okinawa, about:

• 1.5–2 hours drive from Naha

 This is where having a car makes a big difference. One of the reasons we chose to hire a car on the island for an extra day was so that we could visit the Aquarium specifically, and the whole Expo park in general.

Public transport is possible, but:

• It takes longer, and you’ll need to take more than one bus (depending on where you’re staying)
• It’s less flexible, as the buses aren’t as regular on the island as they are in major cities
• Can be tiring with kids, and really suck the fun out of the day!

You can buy tickets at the entrance but we’d recommend booking in advance. Why? Because on busy days these tickets can sell out, but more importantly, the queue to buy them is huge! We felt very smug when we walked past the long queue and straight to the entry gates with our pre-booked tickets.

Best Time to Visit

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a hugely popular attraction. Most families with childen want to go here, and I get it, I actually recommend that they do! But the downside of this is that it can be busy. If you don’t like activities that are too crowded then to avoid crowds, I recommend that you aim to visit:

• Early morning (right after opening). This is what we did, and it worked perfectly for us! We left by lunch time (eating lunch at the food trucks outside) and then had the whole afternoon to spend on the beach.
  or
• Later in the afternoon. Anecdotally, things seem to calm down again as the park creeps towards closing time.

Midday tends to be busiest, especially in peak travel periods. We saw this ourselves, as we saw the crowds building as we were leaving at midday.

Tips for Visiting Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

So what should you do if you want to explore the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium with ease? A few things that made our visit smoother, and that I would recommend to other families were:

• Arrive early if possible (this is our biggest tip!)
• Allow time to explore outside areas too. In particular the beaches and playgrounds: you can see these at no extra charge, as they have free admission.
• Bring snacks/drinks. There is a cafe in the aquarium and food trucks outside, but options are fairly limited if you have fussy kids that don’t enjoy local cuisine.
• Take breaks, there’s plenty of seating, so you can relax and unwind as part of your explorations!

Our Honest Verdict

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of those attractions that genuinely delivers. I have a difficult relationship with aquariums (you can see this in our review of the Lotte Aquarium in Seoul here) but I had no concerns here. The animals had lots of space, the tanks were clean, and they seemed genuinely well looked after.

For families, it’s:

• Easy
• Impressive
• Well-organised
• …and genuinely enjoyable

Okinawa has plenty of beautiful beaches and relaxed experiences, but the aquarium is one of the standout “must-do” attractions, especially with kids. What we really loved was the chance to see whale sharks AND the abundance of attractions surrounding the aquarium. We enjoyed the Emerald Beach and one of the epic on-site playgrounds.

Book ahead, plan your day well, and it’s likely to be one of the highlights of your trip.
