If you’re looking for a relaxed family campsite in western France with a fantastic water park and easy access to beautiful sandy beaches, Eurocamp Zagarella is well worth considering. This is the third Eurocamp site we’ve visited in the St Jean Du Monts area, and it is a great choice, especially if you’re looking for a quieter camp or if you’re travelling with kids. Our Eurocamp Zagarella review covers everything you need to know.

We spent a week here as a family of four during the last week of August, using it as a base to explore the Vendée coast, surf some of France’s best gentle beaches (the boys are enthusiastic surfers) as well as enjoying everything the campsite had to offer. Think a great pool complex with waterslides, where we rarely queued for the slides, even during the school holidays. As well as a huge playground, and bouncy castle complex for kids.

Our Zagarella Stay

Right, let’s dive right into the details! We stayed in a Eurocamp mobile home at Zagarella for five nights. We stayed in a three bedroom classic home, which is the cheapest available option at this site, but it was very comfortable, and we loved the tree-fringed forest location we were given. From this spot we immediately noticed how peaceful the campsite felt, but it was only a 2 minute walk to the playground too.

Unlike some of the larger Eurocamp resorts we’ve visited, Zagarella has a much quieter atmosphere, and there was no noise at night, which we loved. We were also surprised to find that because the park was a bit quieter, there were no long queues at the swimming pools, no struggle to find sunbeds (even when we arrived at the pool right in the middle of the afternoon) and the whole camp had a much more relaxed pace throughout the week than we have found at other Eurocamp sites.

For our family, this was one of the biggest positives of our Eurocamp Zagarella review, but I know that for other families that lack of big evening shows, evening entertainment, live big screen football etc. might be a con rather than a pro. So this is something to bear in mind!

The Swimming Pools

Without question, the water park was our favourite part of Zagarella. Given the relatively small size of the site, the swimming pool complex was disproportionately enormous!

There are indoor and outdoor heated pools (the outdoor pool is a particularly good size) and three water slides: a Space Bowl slide (this was the boy’s favourite) a classic spiral slide, and then a three-lane racing slide.

There was also a kid’s splash area with shallow water and 3 smaller slides for tiny tots. The water in the outdoor pool was heated to 27 degrees every day we were there, while the covered indoor pool was heated to 31 degrees.

Our boys headed for the slides almost every afternoon, and there wasn’t a day of our trip that we didn’t head to the pool complex. But what really surprised us was just how quiet it was there.

Bearing in mind that we visited Eurocamp Zageralla during the summer holidays, we got sunbeds every day even when we arrived at the park mid-afternoon and we rarely waited more than a minute or two for each slide before climbing straight back up again.

We visit a different Eurocamp site every single summer, and we’ve been to three different campsites in this area. This is the quietest one we’ve ever visited. For families used to busy campsites where children spend half their holiday queueing, this made a huge difference to how easy and relaxed the whole experience felt.

The Accommodation at Eurocamp Zagarella

We opted for three bedroom Comfort level accommodation at Eurocamp Zagarella. This was clean, comfortable and exactly what we needed for a week away and although it was basic (it was the cheapest option available for this trip) without a TV or air-conditioning, it had everything we needed for our trip.

Like most Eurocamp holidays, we didn’t spend much time indoors. Breakfast on the terrace. Out exploring all day checking out the local area, surfing, then spending time by the pool. Back in time for a barbecue in the evening.

The accommodation was a comfortable base for us rather than the focus of the holiday: If you’re regular readers here you’ll know we’re always on the go, exploring, and out and about. The beds were comfortable, there was plenty of space, and it had everything we needed.

Eurocamp Zagarella Facilities

I’ve already mentioned the incredible waterpark, which had heated pools, waterslides, and a children’s splash area with mini slides.

There were also:

• 2 playgrounds, one smaller one next to the pool for toddlers, and a larger playground for big kids in the centre of the campsite
• Restaurant and snack bar (We ordered take away pizzas from here one evening, and they tasted great and were good value).
• Small shop. Rely on this for your basics, but not for a full shop. We went to the nearest supermarket, which is just a 7 minute drive away.
• Bike hire
• Multi-sports pitch
• Bouncy castles during the day time; You’ll find these next to the multi-sports pitch.
• Entertainment but only during the high season
• Children’s club for younger children (We didn’t try this, as we were so busy doing other things as a family!)
• Free Wi-Fi across the site 
  

Little explorer enjoyed the bigger playground, although older children may outgrow it fairly quickly. Our oldest, the big explorer, still likes a playground every now and again, but this one was too narrow for him sadly! I would say this is best for kids up to age 10.

Eurocamp Zagarella Location: Is It Well Positioned?

The main reason we stayed in Eurocamp Zagarella was because of its location. We’ve stayed in the area before (check out our review of Eurocamp Clarys Plage) and fell head over heads in love with it!

The campsite sits short drive from some of the Vendée’s most beautiful beaches, with miles of golden sand backed by pine forests. You can be in the biggest nearby beach town, Saint Jean de Monts, in under 10 minutes. And we spent a lot of time in St Gilles, which is around a 20 minute drive away, because the beach here has some of the best surf on the coast for beginner and intermediate surfers.

Both boys have been surfing for a couple of years, and they absolutely love surfing, especially here. We surfed every single morning, then headed to either St Gilles or Saint Jean de Monts for lunch and to explore. Late afternoons and early evenings were spent in the Zagarella pool complex (it opened til 8pm, which is another great feature!)

If you enjoy exploring rather than staying on-site all day, the location is excellent. We will definitely visit Saint Jean de Monts again, and we will consider Zagarella when we do so. I think that’s the biggest recommendation you can give to any holiday destination!

What We Loved

 The fantastic pool complex. Honestly this was the absolute highlight of this site for us!

 How quiet it was. Hardly any queues for the slides meant very happy boys!

 The calm and relaxed atmosphere, with almost no evening noise.

 Great base for exploring the Vendée.

 Beautiful nearby beaches.

 Perfect base for surfers or would-be surfers of all levels.

Things to Consider

This isn’t one of Eurocamp’s biggest or busiest resorts. If your kids love large evening entertainment programmes, climbing walls and tonnes or amenities and dozens of organised activities every day, you may find Zagarella a little quieter than other Eurocamp parks. We’ve definitely been to busier and bigger resorts than this.

Now for us, that wasn’t actually a negative. In fact, we enjoyed having quieter evenings after busy days exploring. We always pack tonnes of card games and deliberately choose accomodation without a TV, because some of our best family bonding time happens on the balcony of a Eurocamp home!

And even as toddlers, my boys would rather watch paint dry than go near a hotel mini disco! But if you’re looking for a lively resort with non-stop activities and things to do, I think there are better options within the Eurocamp umbrella.

Is Eurocamp Zagarella Suitable For Teenagers?

The boys are now 10 and 13. Both boys LOVED the pool complex and the water slides, and there were often teens hanging around the multi-sports areas with footballs. But I would say the rest of the parks amenities (like the playgrounds, kids clubs, bouncy castles) are best suited for kids up to around the age of 12.

Because we were our surfing and exploring every day, we had a great time. But if we’d been on the camp all day, every day, I don’t think there would have been enough to keep our oldest entertained for a whole week!

How Far is Zagarella From The Beach?

Eurocamp Zagarella is around a 7 minutes drive from the nearest beach, which is La Mouettes beach. This isn’t in a big town, but it is a beautiful expanse of sand, and there are facilities like toilets, restaurants, and a few shops there. This is a wide, sandy beach that’s perfect for sandcastles, beach games, and even surfing. We tried the surf here one morning, and the boys had a great time!

If you’re looking for something a little bigger and more lively then in 10 minutes you can be in the resort town of Saint Jean De Monts.

Can You Walk into Saint Jean De Monts from Eurocamp Zagarella?

Sadly, you can’t walk into Saint Jean De Monts from Eurocamp Zagarella, it’s just a little bit too far. There are loads of Eurocamps to choose from in France where you won’t need a car, but this isn’t one of them. Having said that, it is close and the drive is easy! There is also plenty of parking in Saint Jean De Monts, so you won’t have to worry about finding somewhere to put your car when you get there.

Final Thoughts and Further Reading

We had a great time at Eurocamp Zagarella, and we would definitely go back again. But I say that with one caveat: we wouldn’t go back expecting it to transform into a huge activity-packed resort. We’d go back for exactly what we enjoyed most about this visit, and the highlights of our Eurocamp Zagarella review.
