OSAKA FAMILY TRAVEL FAQS
Is Osaka good for a first Japan trip with kids?
Osaka is a great destination for families, but sadly it’s often overlooked in favour of Tokyo. Having visited both cities several times, we found Osaka to be one of the easiest Japanese cities for families to explore.
Osaka is compact, easy to navigate, and packed with attractions designed to appeal to children of all ages. From Universal Studios Japan and giant ferris wheels to high-tech arcades, interactive museums and aquariums, there’s plenty to keep child-sized travellers entertained.
Osaka also serves as an excellent base for day trips. We stayed in Osaka and used it to explore Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. This means families can experience several sides of Japan without constantly changing hotels.
How many days do you need in Osaka?
Most families should plan to spend at least three days in Osaka. This will give you plenty of time to explore all of the city’s biggest attractions, exploring neighbourhoods like Dotonbori and Umeda. This will also allow you to spend a full day at Universal Studios Japan.
If you want to spend two days in Universal Studios Japan, or you’re planning to make day trips to cities like Kyoto and Nara, then consider extending your time in Osaka to beween five and seven days.
Taking things at a slower pace will allow you to experience more of the Kansai region without feeling rushed. Something that will make a huge difference when you’re travelling with kids.
Is Universal Studios Japan worth it?
We love Universal Studios Japan! Both for us, and for many families, visiting Universal Studios Japan is on e of the main reasons to visit Osaka. And one of the highlights of a trip to Japan!
Universal Studios Japan combines world-class rides with immersive themed areas. You can make like Mario in Super Nintendo World and make magic in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It’s a fun, unforgettable experience both for kids and adults alike.
I’m not going to sugar coat it, tickets and Express Passes can be expensive. But careful planning can help you to make the most of your visit. If you’re travelling with kids that enjoy theme parks, video games, and movie magic then USJ is one of the best theme parks in the world.
Is Osaka or Tokyo better with children?
Both Osaka and Tokyo are fantastic for families, but they both offer different experiences. We found Tokyo to be larger, busier, and more jam-packed with world-class attractions, but Osaka is more relaxed and generally easier to navigate.
Families looking for a fast-paced city break with endless attractions will probably prefer Tokyo. Those wanting a slightly slowe pace, excellent food, and easy access to other diverse cities across western Japan are likely to find Osaka is a better pick.
If you’re itinerary allows, try to combine both cities. This will give you the best of both worlds and a real, well-rounded introduction into Japan.
