Best Halloween Theme Park Breaks For Families In The UK (2026 Guide)
From spooky family fun at LEGOLAND Windsor to terrifying scare mazes at Alton Towers Scarefest, these are the UK’s best Halloween theme park breaks, as chosen by a family who love theme parks just as much as they love cultural explorations!
Halloween is one of the best times of year to visit theme parks in the UK
I know that summer is the most popular season to take a UK theme park break. We actually visited Legoland Windsor ourselves this summer. But I think that Halloween is one of the best time of year to visit theme parks in the UK.
You can take advantage of better temperatures (trust me when I say queuing for a roller coaster in the blazing sun during a heatwave was not my idea of a good time!) The parks are beautifully decorated, there are exclusive Halloween shows and attractions, and many of the best rides across the country stay open after dark, giving rides a completely different atmosphere.

As a family, we’ve now visited every Merlin UK attraction bar one, including LEGOLAND Windsor, Chessington World of Adventures, and Alton Towers, and we’ve experienced first-hand just how special their Halloween events can be.
Which is why I’m so excited that Merlin’s 2nd Day Free offer is back (bookable from 18th August to 19th September) and you can use this offer to book Halloween breaks. We booked a trip in Februrary using the same offer for the first time, and it completely changed our experience of the park.
Instead of rushing to fit everything into one day, we could slow down, revisit our favourite rides and let the boys experience attractions we’d usually have skipped because of time. By the end of the weekend we all agreed it was our best ever trip to LEGOLAND Windsor, and I think being able to do it properly and at our own pace is what made all the difference.
If you’re considering a Halloween short break this autumn, these are the parks I’d recommend.

1. LEGOLAND Windsor – Best Halloween Break For Younger Families
If you’re travelling with younger children, LEGOLAND Windsor is probably my favourite Halloween break in the UK. And because our boys are such big Lego fans, it’s actually my favourite theme park on this whole list.

Rather than focusing on frightening attractions, Brick or Treat is designed to be fun rather than scary, with LEGO characters, pumpkin trails, Halloween entertainment, and seasonal shows.
Because there are more than 55 rides and attractions, I’d genuinely recommend spending two days here if your budget allows. When we visited for 2 days in February, we managed almost all the rides. When we visited for one day in July, we managed just eight (although we spent a lot of time exploring shows and play zones too!)
When we visted the park in February, we were staying in the LEGOLAND hotel for the first time (which the boys fell completely in love with), and I was surprised by just how much more relaxing the experience was. We revisited our favourite rides, explored Miniland properly, and didn’t have to spend the day worrying about going round as fast as we could because the boys didn’t want to miss anything.

In my opinion, LEGOLAND’s Halloween Brick or Treat event is perfect for:
- Ages 3-12
- Family looking for their first theme park break
- LEGO fans
- Families wanting a gentle Halloween experience
💡 You can buy day tickets to the LEGOLAND Brick or Treat event here OR Merlin are currently running a second day free event for short breaks to LEGOLAND which you can check out here

2. Alton Towers Scarefest – Best For Older Children
Scarefest is one of the UK’s biggest Halloween events at any UK theme park. We have visited Alton Towers during the Halloween half term, but not for Scarefest yet, as our boys have been a little young.

During the day, you’ll find family entertainment and rides just like you’d always expect from Alton Towers, but evenings bring terrifying scare mazes and the chance to ride world-class coasters in the dark.
If you’ve never ridden Nemesis Reborn or Wicker Man after sunset, Halloween is definitely the time to do it. But the Halloween characters can be scary, especially for young kids and those of a nervous disposition, so I’d recommend this one for older children and teenagers rather than younger families.

3. Chessington World of Adventures – Best All-Round Family Halloween Break
It’s one of the most underrated theme parks on this list, but if your family has children of different ages, Chessington is hard to beat, because there’s a little bit of something for everyone. My boys are now 10 and 13, but if your kids have an even bigger age gap, then this is the park I would choose.

Howl’o’ween manages to combine Halloween entertainment with animals, rides, and seasonal experiences, making it one of the most balanced events in the UK. Smaller kids will love the new Paw Patrol expansion in the park, while older kids can ride bigger rides like the Vampire.
Chessington Howl’o’ween’s event is best for:
- Mixed age families
- Animal lovers
- Halloween without being too scary

4. Thorpe Park Fright Nights – Best For Teenagers
In the intro to this piece, I mentioned that we’d visited all of the Merlin theme parks in the UK…..except for one. And the one we haven’t visited as a family (yet) is Thorpe Park, because our youngest 10-year-old simply isn’t old enough to really make the most of all the rides.

But if you’ve got teenagers, this is the one. Pre-kids, I went to Thorpe Park for one of their Fright Night events, and I can tell you that Fright Nights is genuinely frightening in places and combines some of the UK’s biggest rollercoasters with award-winning scare attractions.
I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children, but thrill-seeking teenagers will absolutely love it. I can’t wait until my boys are ready to give this a try!

5. Warwick Castle – Best unique Halloween getaway
I’ve added Warwick Castle to this list because even though it isn’t a theme park, it is a Merlin attraction, and they throw a genuinely great event for Halloween. Warwick Castle offers something completely different to the other attractions on this list.

Instead of simply decorating a theme park, you’re celebrating Halloween inside a genuine medieval castle. Expect seasonal entertainment, live shows, beautiful grounds and plenty of history mixed with spooky fun. (Because lets be honest, so much of history IS spooky!)
Staying overnight means you can explore the castle at a much more relaxed pace, but if you live nearby then Warwick Castle is a great attraction to experience in a day trip too.
Is a Two-Day Theme Park Break Worth It?
Before this year, I’d probably have said one day was enough for somewhere like LEGOLAND. And it is true that you can experience it and enjoy the experience in one day…we’ve done it ourselves dozens of times.
But now I know what a wonderful luxury it is to have a second day in the park, and would keep doing this whenever possible (and let’s be honest, in our budget!)

Using the 2nd Day Free offer meant we experienced the park in a completely different way. Instead of racing from ride to ride, we could slow down, revisit our favourites, and enjoy the atmosphere without constantly checking the time. We also loved the themed room in the hotel, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food in the hotel too.
The boys loved being able to ride their favourites again, and we actually ended up discovering parts of the park we’d completely missed on previous visits.
If you’re travelling during Halloween, when there are even more seasonal shows and entertainment, I honestly think an overnight stay offers much better value than trying to squeeze everything into a single day.

Halloween Theme Park FAQs
Will All Rides Be Open During These Halloween Theme Park Events?
Unlike at Christmas, when many of the rides at Legoland, Alton Towers, and Chessington will be closed, the rides and attractions are all open during the Halloween season. But some may operate on a seasonal schedule, and they could close due to bad weather or other last-minute reasons.
Are The Parks Decorated For Halloween?
Yes! All of the parks are decorated for Halloween, each in their own unique style. Expect Halloween decor, immersive photo shoot spots, and of course pumpkins galore!
Is LEGOLAND Brick or Treat Scary?
No, not at all! We’ve been attending the Brick or Treat event at LEGOLAND since our boys were toddlers, and they don’t offer any of the scary elements of Halloween: it’s all fun and family-friendly. You’ll see LEGO figures of vampires and ghosts, plenty of pumpkins and decorations in Halloween colours, but absolutely nothing scary or gory.
Can You Dress in Halloween Costume?
Dressing up in Halloween costumes is not only allowed, it’s encouraged at all Merlin attractions. There’s nothing nicer than seeing kids in their Halloween finery! But please note that full costume face masks and imitation weapons are not allowed.
Final Thoughts and Further Reading
We’re going to be in Hong Kong for the October school holidays this year, but usually we take the opportunity to explore a UK theme park (as well as a local pumpkin patch and some old-fashioned trick or treating, of course!) and I genuinely think this is a great offer, and one we would definitely have taken any advantage of ourselves on any other year!
