Alton Towers or Legoland Windsor: Which Theme Park is Best For Kids?
The UK is packed full of excellent theme parks, and Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor are two of our favourites. If you’re planning a family day out or a theme park-based short break, and you’re wondering which theme park is best for kids then this is for you!
Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor are two of the biggest and most well-known theme parks in the UK, and they both offer specific attractions to appeal to children of all ages. We’ve visited each park dozens of times, and even now (age 10 and 13) the boys ask to visit both parks every year. But Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor also both offer very different experiences.
This guide will break down the key differences between Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor so that you can decide what will work best for your family. Spoiler alert: there isn’t one right answer to this question! And the answer to this will be different based on the age of your children, the thrill levels their looking for, and their specific interests.

Who Each Park Is Best For:
LEGOLAND Windsor: Best for Younger Kids (Ages 2–10)
LEGOLAND is a family-friendly theme park that works for the whole family, but it works best for younget children rather than teens, in my opinion. My 13 year old is a Lego fanatic and he LOVES the builds in the park, but he’s outgrown many of the rides. The Legoland rides are designed around smaller children and early family thrill levels.
If your kids love Lego, this park has everything they could wish for. Miniland is a whole world built of Lego, and both my boys favourite part of the park. There’s a small section of the park dedicated to Duplo that works great for pre-schoolers, and Legoland also has several playgrounds designed for kids of all ages for when they want a break from the rides.
Why Legoland is a great park for families:
- Gentle rides built for little ones
- Some more exciting rides, like the Minifigure Speedway and Lego Mythica, that will appeal to older kids
- LEGO play zones all around the park: our favourite is the Castaway camp play park.
- Daily shows and creative activities (if you’re kids love building with lego, there’s no better theme park to choose!)
- Plenty of shade and rest areas
Notable attractions:
- Minifigure Speedway. This is the newest ride in the park, and the most thrilling. As a result it’s a new-favourite for both of my boys.
- LEGO City Driving School: For a long time this was my boys favourite ride and it’s such a classic
- Miniland (fantastic LEGO recreations, and hands-down the best area of the park)

Alton Towers: Best for Older Kids & Thrill Seekers (Ages 7+)
Alton Towers is Britain’s biggest theme park, and it offers both big thrill rides and family attractions. Alton Towers is best known for its epic roller coasters (some of which are so terrifying that even I think twice before riding) which is why, to get the best value from the park, it’s best suited to older kids and thrill seekers in my opinion.
But that doesn’t mean that Alton Towers doesn’t also appeal to a younger audience. There are also gentle options for toddlers and pre-schoolers to enjoy. (Read: CBeebies Land Makes Alton Towers Worth Visiting With Younger Kids) CBeebies land is such a wonderful sub-section of the main Alton Towers park, offering attractions themed around the TV shows aired on the CBeebies channel. My boys loved the ‘In the Night Garden’ ride in particular when they were little, and the ride is a wonderful, gentle boat journey that even babies can enjoy.
What i’m trying to say is that Alton Towers is not just about adrenaline ,there are gentle options. But the park thrives on variety, and is best known for its bigger thrill rides. For this reason, I think it’s best suited to older kids who will appreciate the mix of gentle and high octaine rides. This is also the BEST park for multi-age families who want all their kids to have a good time.
Why it works for families:
- Wide range of thrill rides
- CBeebies Land is the perfect spot for younger kids
- Plenty of dark rides and immersive experiences
- Adventure trails and water rides (the pirate area is particularly great for this)
Notable attractions:
- Galactica (this is one of my favourites: a flying coaster)
- Thirteen (twisty fun with a dark edge)
- CBeebies Land (great for 2–7s, but younger and older kids may also enjoy this)
Practical Tips Before You Go
Book in Advance
It doesn’t matter whether you choose Alton Towers or Legoland Windsor. Both parks get busy in school holidays, and both have regular ‘sell out’ days where you simply can’t buy a ticket on the day. Booking tickets, and Express Passes if you’re going to use them, early can save time and money. (on the gate tickets are significantly more expensive than booking in advance).
Dress for the Day
Weather matters: we are living in the UK after all! It’s important to remember that both parks are outdoors. Hats, sunscreen and breathable fabrics are best in the summer. Warm layers in the winter. And comfy shoes are essentials, no matter when you visit.
Bring Snacks
Theme park food is fun but often expensive, and honestly? We don’t love the food enough in either of the two parks that we would pay top end prices for it. Bringing snacks makes the day easier with hungry kids, and saves more money than you might think too. We love an in park picnic, then spend our money on ice cream and small souviners.
Plan Your Ride Order
One of the best ways to minimise ride queues is to plan your ride order in advance, choosing the ride you want to go on most and riding that first. I also recommend that you check ride height requirements before you go to avoid disappointment. This is something we’ve fallen foul of more than once.
Which Is Cheaper: Alton Towers or Legoland Windsor?
Money is so often a factor when choosing which attraction to visit: after all, it doesn’t grow on trees! So which is cheaper: Alton Towers or Legoland Windsor? IActually, the prices for both parks are very similar.
It’s worth noting that both parks operate dynamic pricing: meaning they’re more expensive at weekends and during peak holiday periods. So travelling during the off peak season is the best way to save money in either park.

Real Family Recommendation
We’ve visited Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor dozens of times over the year. And from 3 to 13, my boys have had wonderful experiences in both parks. But which is best? Alton Towers or Legoland Windsor? Here’s our tried-and-tested recommendations:
If you have kids under 8:
LEGOLAND Windsor is typically the more rewarding first-time experience for the youngest kids, especially if LEGO or Duplo is already a favourite. And the height restrictions on the rides are low enough that even smaller visitors will still find plenty to ride. Check out ticket prices here.
If you have older kids or teens:
Alton Towers offers more variety, from gentle rides to thrilling coasters that will satisfy the whole family. We have a 4 year age gap between our boys, and one who is tall for his age, whilst the youngest is smaller. Alton Towers is a great fit for them, as there’s something they can both enjoy. There’s no single “better” park, but there is a best choice for your family based on age, thrill appetite and how you like to travel. For kids that want gentle rides and a more active, hands-on trip with Lego to build and playgrounds to explore, Legoland is the best pick. If it’s big thrills and a ride-centric trip that you’re looking for, Alton Towers is the better fit.
