Things To Do In Naha Okinawa With Kids: Best Family-Friendly Attractions
If you’re planning a family trip to Okinawa, it’s likely that you’ll spend at least a few days in Naha. And for convenience, many families (including ours) choose Naha as their base for exploring the rest of the island. As the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, Naha is often seen as the gateway to the islands, but there’s far more to the city than simply being a transport hub. There are so many things to do in Naha Okinawa with kids!
From fascinating cultural attractions and historic castles to colourful markets, hands-on experiences and family-friendly parks, there are plenty of activities to choose from. You’ll even find a city beach and some of the best ice cream we’ve ever eaten.
Whether you’re visiting Naha for a day before heading to Okinawa’s beach resorts, using Naha as your base for exploring the island, or somewhere in between, these attractions are well worth adding to your itinerary.

Wander Along Kokusai Street
Kokusai Street is the heart of downtown Naha and one of the best places to soak up the city’s atmosphere.
Stretching for almost two kilometres, the street is packed with souvenir shops, restaurants, street food stalls and entertainment. You can walk along the palm tree fringed streets, but there are also an abundant of covered arcades across Kokusai Street. These are the perfect spot to escape both the extreme heat and the rain.
Our boys loved browsing quirky Japanese toys, Okinawan snacks and colourful souvenir stores while we were happy eating local delicacies at every turn. Many of the shops have a cool, laid-back vibe that feels uniquely Okinawan.
DON’T MISS:
- Blue Seal Ice Cream. Founded on the island, this is the best ice cream in Japan and beyond
- Okinawan sweet potato treats. They may just be potatoes, but they’re turned into magic
- Traditional Okinawan souvenirs. We found a store where you could open your own pearls and then have them turned into jewellery, which was such a highlight!
teamLab Future Park Okinawa
Not many people realise that Okinawa is home to its own teamLab site. This is not a replica of the teamLab galleries in Tokyo, so if you’ve already visited (and loved) teamLabs then this is still worth visiting as an attraction in its own right!
teamLab Future Park Okinawa is in the heart of Naha. You can either walk to the museum if you’re staying nearby, or the closest monorail station to teamLab Future Park Okinawa is Omoromachi Station. You can actually see the entrance from the station, and it’s just a one minute walk via the pedestrian walkway. So if you’re choosing this as a rainy day activity, you can get to the entrance without getting wet!

This park focuses on the unity between man and nature. It boasts a virtual living aquarium, and a Sketch gallery where you can bring your artwork to life, which is perfect for families with kids of all ages.
Spend Time At Naminoue Beach
One of the most surprising attractions in Naha is that the city has its own beach. This is close to the cruise port, and is easily accessible from the city centre (we actually walked the the beach from our hotel, which we weren’t expecting to be able to do!)
Naminoue Beach offers calm waters and soft sand, with a view of the flyover above the beach making it completely unique. While Okinawa has more spectacular beaches elsewhere on the island (and we definitely visited much more beautiful beaches during our stay) this is a convenient option if you’re staying in Naha and want some beach time without travelling far.
Like all other beaches on the island, access is completely free of charge. But you can hire parasols and deck chairs directly on the beach if you want them. The beach also offers fresh-water showers, changing rooms, and lockers if you need them.
NOTE: You should only swim in this beach when there are lifeguards in place during the official beach season. This season runs from April to October, and the water is open daily from 10am to 6pm.
Ride The Yui Rail
Children often love public transport in Japan and Naha’s Yui Rail is no exception. The elevated monorail provides fantastic views across the city and is an attraction in its own right for younger visitors like my boys. It’s one of the easiest ways to reach many of Naha’s top attractions, even if you do have a car (as traffic in Naha is notoriously chaotic). And as it runs straight from the airport, it is also the cheapest way to get into Naha from the airport!

Because we hired a car during our time in Okinawa, we only used the Yui Rail once, but it was a fun experience for the boys, and it allowed us to experience the city from a different angle.
TOP TIP: Consider purchasing a day pass if you plan to visit multiple attractions in one day. Although the Yui Rail is an affordable form of public transport, buying several individual tickets will soon add up!
Explore Shurijo Castle
No visit to Naha is complete without visiting Shurijo Castle, the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Although much of the castle was damaged by fire in 2019, reconstruction continues and visitors can still explore the grounds, learn about Okinawa’s unique history and see restoration work taking place. I do want to emphasise that this is more ruin than castle, so if you’ve visited some of Japan’s other castles during your trip, you might want to manage your expectations a little.
Despite this, it’s still a surprisingly interesting attraction, worth taking an hour our of your day for, and kids of all ages will enjoy wandering through the impressive gates and learning how Okinawa’s history differs from mainland Japan.
Entry to Shurijo Castle costs 400 yen per adult, 300 yen for high school students, and 160 yen for elementary and junior high students.
If you want to really delve into the heart of the Castle and its rich history, you could consider booking a guided tour. The Okinawa Shuri Castle Peace Walking Tour takes 4 hours and also includes Okinawa soba noodles and other dishes at a long-established restaurant with a motif of architecture and gardens from the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Take A Day Trip To The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Although technically located outside Naha (the drive time takes around an hour) the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the island’s most famous family attractions and deserves a place on every Okinawa itinerary. We loved every moment of our visit to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which is why I’m adding this here too.
This is considered one of the best aquariums in Japan, and is one of just four aquariums in the world where you can see enormous whale sharks in captivity. You can also see manta rays, turtles, a huge tank filled with sharks, and countless marine species.
We rented a car to visit the Okinawa Churaimi Aquarium, but if you’re staying in Naha you can take a day trip via bus tour that will take you to the Aquarium AND the fascinating (and so much fun for kids) American Village too. We visited both attractions with the boys and they genuinely loved it. This day trip is so much easier than the stress of attempting to get to the aquarium on public transport: Okinawa’s public transport system is notoriously difficult.

Relax At Fukushuen Garden
Naha is a big bustling city, but you wouldn’t know that if you were standing in the Fukushuen Garden. This beautiful Chinese-style garden offers a peaceful escape from the city.
Featuring waterfalls, bridges, ponds and traditional architecture, it’s a lovely place to slow down between sightseeing stops. It’s also more child-friendly than it sounds at first, because kids will enjoy exploring the pathways and spotting fish in the ponds. You’re never too old to stop getting excited when you see a fish swimming around underneath you!
The admission fees for the Fukushuen Garden are insanely affordable. Adults can enter for just 200 yen, which at current exchange rates is around £1. You can buy tickets on the gate when you arrive, and this is one of the best experiences you can have in Okinawa that costs no more than the change in your pocket!
Enjoy Naha Dining Experiences
My boys would never forgive me if I wrote a post about our visit to Naha and didn’t mention the restaurants. Some of their favourite dining experiences of our whole trip to Japan took place in this city!
If you’re travelling with kids that are fussy eaters then they’ll love Okinawa, and I suspect you will find it so much easier to feed them here than anywhere else in Japan. This is largely because Okinawa, and in particular Naha, has a lot of American influences, so the food feels so familiar for kids, while as adults we enjoyed the American takes on Japanese classics.
Some of the restaurants we tried that are recommended by my boys include:
- Jumbo Steak Hans. This is a steak house chain, but the steaks were amazing! There was also a fresh salad bar, and (for the adults) the locally sourced cocktail menu was excellent too
- Yakiniku. We all loved this so much we tried two different restaurants! We cooked our own thinly sliced premium beef and pork, eating until we were totally stuffed. If it’s in your budget, try Yakiniku baka Ichidai, which is the best yakiniku in Naha!
Is Naha Worth Visiting With Kids?
I think Naha is probably one of the most family-friendly cities in Japan. While many visitors focus on Okinawa’s beaches and resorts, Naha offers a fantastic mix of culture, history, food and family-friendly attractions. And when kids want to cool off and let off some steam, there’s a beach right there too!
Spending two or three days in the city gives families the chance to experience a different side of Okinawa before heading to the coast. I do recommend opting for a hotel with a pool, to give kids somewhere to relax and unwind after days of exploring historical and cultural attractions. We did exactly that, and it was the best decision we could have made!
For many families, Naha provides the perfect introduction to Okinawa and is well worth including in any Okinawa itinerary.

Whether you’re exploring historic castles, tasting local food, relaxing on the beach or discovering Okinawa’s unique culture, there are plenty of things to do in Naha with kids.
Combined with Okinawa’s laid-back atmosphere and its own excellent public transport, Naha makes a surprisingly family-friendly destination and an ideal starting point for a wider Okinawa adventure.
