Protest Surf School Fuerteventura Review: An Incredible Experience, Perfect For Kids
Protest Surf School in Correlejo is an incredible school, and learning to surf is a great thing to do if you’re visiting Fuerteventura with kids.
My boys have well and truly got the surfing bug! They’ve surfed in France and Spain and Mexico as well as in the UK of course (Surfing Japan is next on the agenda!) But one of their earlier surf experiences was with the Protest Surf Center in Correlejo and the kindness and patience of their instructor Cris is one of the factors in why they chose to continue their surfing journey.

Why Choose Protest Surf School Fuerteventura?
I’ve just started the hunt for a decent surf school in Okinawa, and it made me realise I didn’t complete my Protest Surf School review! This was one of my favourite surf experiences for our boys, for a myrid of different reasons, including:
- The Convenient Location. Correlejo is one of the biggest surf hubs of the Canary Islands, and Protest Surf Center is located in the heart of Corrrelejo. It was easy to reach from our hotel, and easy to find too!
- The Wonderful Instructors. Protest have a host of different instructors available, we were matched with Cris and she was truly excellent. The boys liked (and more importantly) trusted her, and as our youngest was only 7, she gave him a lot of one-to-one support in the water.
- Value for Money. We’ve paid for expensive surfing lessons and we’ve paid for cheap surfing lessons. Protest Surf School sat somewhere in the middle, but it felt good value for money thanks to the quality of the teaching and the longer lesson time.
What The Experience Was Like
We booked our surfing experience from one of the vendors by the beach a day in advance: if you’re travelling during the peak summer period though, I would recommend booking well in advance!
On the day of the surf experience, we visited the Protest Surf Center shop (which is in the heart of Correlejo) where I paid the balance for the session, and the boys were fitted out with wet suits and measured up for surf boards.
They then met their instructor Cris, who loaded everything onto the roof of the branded Protest Surf Center van. I road in the van with the boys (and Cris of course!) while Mike followed behind in our hire car, because we wanted to watch the boys surf.
Cris took us to the nearby La Oliva beach, which is a popular spot with surfers and protected enough that the waves are great for beginners. There were some other surf schools and groups in the water, but it didn’t feel too crowded.
We had booked a 3 hour session, and Cris didn’t waste time getting the boys in the water! They spend around 20 minutes on land warming up and practicing their pop ups, then they headed into the waves!
In total they spend 2.5 hours of their 3 hour session surfing, which I was impressed with, as other schools spend much less time the water.
The boys felt exhausted at the end of their session, but so proud of themselves too! They learnt some new skills, improved their posture, and increased their confidence on the boards too: it was a really great lesson!
At the end of the session, the boys came home in our car with us, but because they have their own van, there’s no need to hire a car if you don’t want to! The school will take you to and from the beach and the surf school, all included in the cost of your lesson.
How Much Does The Protest Surf School Cost?
I’m going to focus on kids lessons when answering this question, because that’s what we pay for when we travel (Mike and I have tried and tried, but we can’t actually surf!) What I liked about Protest Surf School was that the more lessons you booked, the cheaper they were.
So if you’re spending a week in Fuerteventura, I would recommend booking a block of 3 lessons to last the week and save you some money: you’ll only have one and want to go back again!

Note: Kids surf lessons are only available during the school holidays and are for children aged 11 and over. If you’re travelling outside of the holidays or with younger kids (like ours) you can book private lessons, but these will cost a little more. I’ve put the prices for these below too.

Would We Recommend The Protest Surf School In Correlejo?
I would absolutely recommend the Protest Surf Shcool in Correlejo: and when I asked the boys they agreed, but even more emphatically! Fuerteventura has a reputation for being an amazing place to surf, so if you want to learn anywhere, there’s no better place!
Combine this with the care and attention of the Protest team, as well as the quality of the teaching they offered, and I would say that this was the best thing we did for our boys during our time in Fuerteventura!
