Asakusa Sumo Club Show Review (2026): Is It Worth It?

When we booked the Asakusa Sumo Dinner show in Tokyo, we expected a fun evening…But what we didn’t expect was for little H to step into the ring to fight a sumo wrestler in front of a cheering crowd. He loved absolutely every second of it. And so did we! Without exaggeration, the Asakusa Sumo club show was one of our favourite moments of our time in Tokyo.

But is the Asakusa sumo show actually worth booking? And is it suitable for families? Here’s our honest Asakusa Sumo Club show review, including what to expect, what it’s really like with kids, and whether it’s worth the price.

Quick Verdict: Is The Asakusa Sumo Show Worth It?

The short answer to the question everyone asks, is the Asakusa Sumo Show really worth it, is yes! Especially if you’re travelling as a family.

The whole thing we family friendly from start to finish. And what we didn’t expect was how funny this show would be: we were all laughing out loud throughout the whole thing. We found it interactive and surprisingly educational. There was plenty to keep both adults and kids of all ages engaged.

If you’re looking for something a little bit different in Tokyo that isn’t just sightseeing, this is a fantastic choice. Mike has always wanted to see sumos live, and I think this is the very best way we could have done this as a family.

What Is the Asakusa Sumo Club Show?

The Asakusa Sumo Dinner Show is a live entertainment experience in Tokyo where you can:

• Watch real sumo demonstrations. Two ex-professional sumo wrestlers will show you their daily training routines and then take you through several bouts against each other.
  
• Learn about the traditions and rules of sumo. From the throwing of the salt to the rituals in the ring, we learnt so much about sumo without even realising because we were so busy laughing at the sumos, who are almost like comedians with their timing and mannerisms.
  
• Watch a traditional meiko dance. This is how the show begins, and it really sets the tone for the whole thing. When she was dancing, it was the only time during the whole show that the room was compeletely silent. I was completely mesmerised!
  
• Enjoy a Japanese meal during the show. This is a traditional chanko hot pot (the dish sumo wrestlers eat everyday) and the food at the show is unlimited, so you can order as much as you like.
  
• At the end of the show you can even take part in the action. This was the best and funniest bit. Then after this, you could have your photo taken with the sumos, and were gifted the photo in your free goodie bag to take home.

The Asakusa Sumo Club is designed to be accessible and entertaining for visitors, while still giving a genuine insight into sumo culture. I will say that this is aimed at tourist (everyone in the room during our show were tourists) but I don’t think this is the negative thing some people make it to be. It makes sense that tourists would be the ones that want to learn more about sumo culture!

Our Experience (Spoiler Alert: This Was a Trip Highlight)

This was hands-down one of the most fun evenings we had in Tokyo. When we arrived we weren’t sure what to expect: there isn’t loads of information online, and we didn’t seek out reviews because we wanted to be surprised.

We arrived around 20 minutes before the show began, and we had been assigned our row in advance. Our compere was waiting for us at the door, chatting to everyone as they arrived, and as soon as we sat down dinner was served. There was an app to order drinks and extras of all the food as and when you wanted it: You didn’t have to order the whole meal again, you could pick and choose what you wanted. The boys ordered more edamame beans, fried chicken, and dessert (their favourite bits!)

The show itself is:

• Light-hearted and genuinely funny. For examples the sumos will show you how to tie their loin clothes…by pretending to pull them off each other! It’s family-friendly comedy though, nothing PG13. The boys couldn’t stop laughing.
  
• Interactive (without feeling forced). Each side of the room is assigned their own sumo to cheer for for the duration of the event.
  
• Really well-paced. It lasted around 2 hours but you wouldn’t have noticed: it felt like less than half of that! We could have watched another 2.

But the absolute highlight?

 The audience participation at the end.

Around 10 people are invited up to “fight” a sumo wrestler (five from each side of the room). If more than 10 people want to take part lots are drawn and somehow, our youngest was chosen to fight. This was like all of his dreams come true! And the way he threw himself into it, it was like he didn’t realise the sumo was 5 times his size!

He got into the ring, gave it his best effort, and came away absolutely buzzing. With everyone in the room cheering for him and chanting his name. It’s one of those moments we’ll all remember from the trip, and he’s still talking about it most days. Everyone at school knows of his victory!

Is It Good for Kids?

The short answer to this question is yes! In fact, the Asakusa Sumo Club is great for kids, and we were one of three families with younger kids in the audience of our particular show. I think this is one of the most family-friendly experiences we did in Japan, because it has something to appeal to everyone.

The show worked so well for kids because it featured:

• Lots of humour, and when kids are laughing they’re more likely to stay engaged.
• Audience participation. In fact we were encouraged to shout, cheer, bang out feet. So you don’t have to worry about keeping kids still and quiet. In fact, the more energy you bring to the show, the better it will be.
• Short, varied segments. This is great because if you’re kids don’t enjoy a particular section of the show, it’s over very quickly!
• A relaxed, informal atmosphere

It’s not a quiet, formal cultural experience. Although we learnt alot, it was done in such a fun way, you almost wouldn’t notice you were learning anything! So you don’t have to worry about kids being bored or sitting perfectly still.

What to Expect on the Night

The experience usually runs for around two hours. This might sound like a long time to adds kids to sit still for, but honestly, it went so fast that we all wished it was longer!

I won’t tell you everything (there has to be some surprises!) but the format includes:

• An introduction to sumo by a knowledgeable compere
• Demonstrations and bouts between two sumos
• An explanation of sumo rules and rituals
• A Q&A where you can ask the sumos anything
• Audience participation
• Photo opportunities
• Each person gets a gift at the end!

Why Choose The Asakusa Sumo Club Experience

I am aware that the Asakusa Sumo Club isn’t the cheapest experience out there (the tickets actually cost more than the tickets for our day at Disneyland) but now that we’ve done it, I can see why.

This experience isn’t just a show: you’re not just a passive bystander. It’s an interactive experience where you get to be a part of something special. And if someone in your party is chosen to get into the ring, I promise you that will be the best thing that could happen to you during your whole time in Tokyo!

The Asakusa Sumo Club combines dinner and entertainment into one booking (which explains why it’s a little more expensive than some other sumo shows) and it’s location makes it easy to fit into your itinerary too.

But what we really loved was that it was suitable for all ages. 40-something Mike with a keen interest in Sumo Culture learnt something new, but so did 9 year old H, who was so engaged he actually asked for a book about Sumo so he could learn more! And even our 13 year old (the moody teen, historically the hardest to please in most families) said this was the best thing we did in the whole trip. I guess you can’t really put a price on that!

Should You Book The Asakusa Sumo Club in Advance?

In my experience, the Asakusa Sumo Club is one of the those activities you should definitely book in advance. This is a popular experience, particularly with families and tourists looking for something unique to do in Tokyo. As i’ve already mentioned, everyone in the room for our show was a tourist.

Booking ahead means you can plan your itinerary more easily, you secure your preferred time slot and you will avoid disappointment. We booked the earlier slot, for example, so we could explore the Senso-ji Temple afterwards, during dusk when it’s at its quietest.

Where Is The Asakusa Sumo Club?

As the name suggests, the show takes place in Asakusa, one of the most popular areas of Tokyo.

It’s easy to reach via public transport and works well as part of a wider day exploring the Sumida are, Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise Street, and it’s pretty close to the Tokyo Skytree, so we combined it with this too.

What’s The Food Like At The Asakusa Sumo Club Show?

The Asakusa Sumo Club is a dinner show, which means that Dinner is included as part of the experience. This is a sumo meal, and actually talking about what you’re eating is a part of the show.

You’ll typically be served chanko nabe, which is the stew that sumo wrestlers eat and prepare in their stable, alongside fried chicken (because sumo wrestlers consider chicken to be good luck) and then endemame beans and dessert.

We found the food:

• good quality
• nicely presented
• and a fun part of the overall experience

Even for slightly picky eaters (in our family that is my oldest!) there were enough familiar elements to make it enjoyable. Everyone left with full tummies, and we didn’t have to stop for a second dinner on the way home (which was my back up plan before we went in!)

Tokyo has no shortage of incredible things to do, but experiences like this are what really make a trip unforgettable. I’m aware that this is a little pricier than some of the other experiences that you can book in Tokyo, but you get what you pay for. And it really was worth every penny.

It’s fun, unique, and something you’ll be talking about long after you get home. For us, this was a core memory experience, and one we will never regret having.
