Sanrio Puroland (often referred to as Hello Kitty Land) is an indoor theme park dedicated to all things Hello Kitty, and her other Sanrio friends, including Cinnamonroll and Pompompurin. This Sanrio Puroland Guide shares everything you need to know to visit this underrated park on the outskirts of Tokyo.

I’ve been a fan of Hello Kitty since I was a kid, collecting memorabilia well into my late 20s. And after the chaotic early child-rearing years, I’ve come back to Hello Kitty again in my 40s: She releases my inner child!

We have now visited Sanrio Puroland four times, as a family of four with two boys. This gives us a great understanding of how the park works and what families can expect. Where is Sanrio Puroland? How to Get to Sanrio Puroland

Sanrio Puroland isn’t actually located in Tokyo (although that’s where most people visit the park from). It’s located in Tama City and getting there will take around between 30 minutes – 1 hour from Tokyo, depending on where in the city you’re based.

Getting to Sanrio Puroland may be a little time consuming, but it is easy!

• Travel from wherever you’re staying to Shinjuku station, which is a large and easily accessible central hub.
• From here the Keio Line Semi-Special Express bound for Hashimoto.
• Once you’re on this train, you’ll stay on it all the way to the Keio Tama Center Station, which is where you’ll get off.
• From there, it’s around a 3 to 5-minute walk to Sanrio Puroland, and this is well sign posted from the station, so it’s near-impossible to get lost.

The train from Shinjuku takes 30 minutes as long as you get on the express (the local train will run the same route but much slower) and will cost around ¥320 to ¥330 one-way.

Make sure you allow time to explore Keio Tama Center Station (you’ll need around 10 minutes) because this beautiful station is Sanrio themed. There are little details everywhere, so it’s well worth taking your time to pass through and soak it all in.

What to Wear to Sanrio Puroland

People often ask me what to wear to Sanrio Puroland. I’m a mum in my 40s, so I don’t do this topic justice. But many of the local women, and younger women, dress up when they visit Sanrio Puroland. Think heels, chiffon skirts and shirts, lots of layers and pastels – watching what other people wear is a Hello Kitty dreamland in its own right.

My top tips are:

• If you’re thinking of dressing up, do it! You won’t be alone and it enhances the experience
• You can buy fabulous accessories on-site, such as headbands, bags, and t shirts
• Unless you’re used to wearing heels all day, choose comfortable shoes. Sore feet can ruin even the best days out!

TOP TIP: As soon as you enter Sanrio Puroland, if you turn right, you will enter the parks huge gift shop. Head here at the beginning of the day if you want to buy a head band, t-shirt, or other adorable accessories to wear during your Sanrio day.

The Rides in Sanrio Puroland

Sanrio Puroland is a riot of colour and a real sensory overload. The atmosphere is vibrant, and because of the theme of the park, you’ll find pastel colours, kawaii characters, and floral motifs everywhere.

But this isn’t a theme park in the conventional sense. There are only two very gentle rides in the whole park:

• Sanrio Character Boat Ride. This is a boat ride set to music that takes you through the whole universe of Sanrio Characters. It is the longest, and the best, ride in the park.
• Mymeroad Drive. This is a My Melody themed car ride. This is a much shorter, smaller ride but equally kawaii. Both rides are suitable for all ages, but this ride is perhaps best suited to children than to adults.

How We Avoided The Longest Queues at Sanrio Puroland

Perhaps my best tip for visiting Sanrio Puroland is to take advantage of the Puropass to avoid the longest queues. This is something that isn’t well publicised in the park, and we actually didn’t realise this was on option on our first visit!

Because there are only two rides at Sanrio Puroland the queues for these can get long (upwards of 2 hours) especially during peak periods like Cherry Blossom season. But Sanrio Puroland offers a fast pass system called Puropass that both unknown and incedibly affordable.

You can use the Puropass for the two rides in the park and to meet Hello Kitty in the Lady Kitty House. It costs ¥500 (£2.56) per person per ride or ¥1,000 (£5.18) per ride for a family pass for up to 4 people.

You buy the passes from an automated machine, and these are located next to the ride entrance, but they’re so unassuming that no one seemed to be using them or no they were there. I’ve added a photo above so you know what you’re looking for. On our last three Sanrio Puroland visits we used these for ALL the attractions and saved ourselves HOURS of queue time!

The Other Attractions in Sanrio Puroland

Many people hear that Sanrio Puroland only has two rides, and wonder what an earth they’re going to do all day! But just because they don’t offer conventional theme park attractions doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to see and do.

Aside from these two rides, the other attractions in Sanrio Puroland are:

• Kawaii Kabuki: This is my favourite attraction in the whole park! A unique performance blending traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre with Sanrio characters, complete with elaborate costumes, this is as mad and as fabulous as it sounds!
  
• Lady Kitty House: Explore Hello Kitty’s elegant home, including her rose garden and tea room. This is a great spot for photo opportunities and then you get to go into a room and have your photo taken with Hello Kitty herself.
  
• Kiki & Lala Twinkling Studio: Immerse yourself in the dreamy world of the Little Twin Stars, featuring interactive exhibits and photo spots. This is one of the quieter exhibitions so great if you need a break from the lines.
  
• The Wisdom Tree. This is a stunning centrepiece that sits right in the middle of the park. You can climb the tree, and ring the bell of wisdom inside. At the base of the tree is a stage where performances and parades take place regularly through the day.
  
• Charaguri Residence: Visit themed rooms where you can meet and take photos with various Sanrio character.

SANRIO PUROLAND GUIDE TOP TIP: You need to reserve a spot (and get a reservation QR code) to meet the Sanrio characters. Visit the residence to do this early as spaces book up fast and you can’t buy these via fastpass. You can get one reservation per PHONE/DEVICE, not one per group. So the more of you have access to a phone and the wifi in the park, the more characters you can meet. Because the boys didn’t have phones of their owns, that meant we got to see two characters for our family of four, for example.

Hello Kitty’s Continuing Popularity

Hello Kitty was first created on 1st November 1974, so she has recently celebrated her 50th birthday. She is a ubiquitous icon and although her popularity peaks and wanes, she’s currently having a real moment, getting her own collection with both big brands and high street brands.

Many of the other Sanrio Characters, such as Kuromi, Pompompurin and My Melody are also becoming more popular (in the west at least) than they have ever been before. Sanrio is a real cultural icon again, after more than a decade where being a Hello Kitty fan wasn’t particularly ‘cool’.

As a result there are Hello Kitty themed businesses popping up everywhere. We even visited a Hello Kitty Apple Cafe in Seoul.

Why am I telling you this? Because this means that in 2026 the Sanrio Puroland park is set to be busier than ever! I definitely noticed the difference visiting the park in 2025 compared to my last visit in 2023. Allow plenty of time to explore everything, and be prepared for higher crowd levels. And please book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, in case the park reaches full capacity (it happens!)

Food in Sanrio Puroland

This Sanrio Puroland guide wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the food: One of the things I love most about this park is the food at Sanrio Puroland. This isn’t just about filling your tummy at lunchtime: the food is a part of the experience. And so its no surprise that there are more restaurants than rides! There are smaller sweet stands and snack carts, but the three main restaurants in Sanrio puroland are:

• Restaurant Yakata. This is a buffet-style restaurant located on the fourth floor of Rainbow Hall. This is also our favourite restaurant in the whole park! Because its buffet style the boys can get anything they want, and most of the dishes served individually in the other restaurants are available here. It includes Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisines and you get a 70-minute all-you-can-eat experience.
  
  But the main attraction of this spot? It has a stage where Sanrio characters appear while you’re eating: pure magic! The restaurant operates from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM, and prices are approximately ¥3,200 for adults and ¥1,600 for KIDS

• Sanrio Rainbow World Restaurant. This fun, colourful restaurant is also situated on the fourth floor. But this is a food court style restaurant featuring seven character-themed sections. Each area offers a unique menu, including pasta, omurice, donburi dishes, and a variety of desserts like cupcakes and crepes.
  
  This restaurant operates from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM so is a better choice if you want an early dinner or an afternoon snack.

• Character Food Court. Located on the first floor of Sanrio Town, this is self service restaurant with a casual vibe. You can get Japanese curries shaped like Sanrio characters, ramen with themed toppings, and an assortment of kawaii desserts. We tried Hello Kitty mochi balls here on our list trip!

Like the rainbow world restaurant, this one opens from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with most dishes ranging from ¥1,500 to ¥2,500.

The Best Time To Visit Sanrio Puroland

If you don’t want to battle the crowds then the best time to visit Sanrio Puroland is on a weekday. Anecdotally, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are considered the quietest days, but we have visited on a Monday during the peak cherry blossom season and found that the park was really manageable, especially as we used the Puropass fast passes for everything!

As you would expect, weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods are all a very bad time to visit the park in terms of crowd levels! But if that’s when you have to go and you have no other choices, there are tips (such as using the fast pass, arriving early, and booking your restaurants when you arrive) that can mean you’ll still have a great time!

One thing we always do is make sure we arrive at the park early: before they officially open the doors. Find the opening hours here. This means you can enjoy the most popular attractions before the park becomes too crowded: get straight in line for the boat ride (the most popular of the two rides) for example.

It’s worth noting that because Sanrio Puroland is a completely indoor park, it’s also a great option for days where it’s too hot/cold/wet to be outside. If you want to entertain your kids indoors, in a climate controlled environment, then it’s a great choice!

✔ Kids under 12, particularly children keen to embrace Japan’s kawaii culture

✔ Bad weather or hot weather. The whole park is indoors and climate controlled

What Would We Do Differently Next Time?

We’ve now visited Sanrio Puroland four times, and each time we learn something new, and add something extra to our list of things we’d do differently next time. Learn from our experience by making sure you take advantage of these tips:

• We’d arrive 30 minutes before opening. Being at the front of the queue and waiting a while is a much better place to be than being at the back of a busy crowd
• We’d book our Puropass slots straight away. Choose the times that work best for you, and plan the rest of your day around these, queue-free!
• Get a slot for the Yakata Restaurant as soon as it opens, if you want to eat here. Tables are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis and you can’t pre-book. We once waited an hour and a half to be seated here!
• We’d visit the gift shop first. This is the opposite of my advice for nearly every other attraction, but you’re going to want to buy and then wear your headbands and other merch straight away!

How Many Rides Are There At Sanrio Puroland?

Sanrio Puroland isn’t a conventional theme park, and so you won’t find an abundance of rides and rollercoasters here. Sanrio Puroland has just two rides. There are the Sanrio Character Boat Ride and the Mymeroad Drive ( a My Melody themed car ride). Both are very gentle, family-friendly rides with no height restrictions meaning anyone can ride.

Is Sanrio Puroland Good For Kids?

Sanrio Puroland is one of the most child-friendly attractions in Tokyo! Why? because there are no height limits for any of the attractions, meaning that children can enjoy everything. Even babies and toddlers are allowed to enjoy the two rides: My Melody Drive and the Sanrio Character Boat Ride. The parade is also wonderfully well-set up for kids, and the food in all of the restaurants includes child-friendly options.

Is Sanrio Puroland Worth Visiting If You Don’t Like Hello Kitty?

I am a huge Hello Kitty and Sanrio fan. My boys are……definitely not! But we still all have a good time at Sanrio Puroland. For the most part I know they’re indulging me, but the boys do love the food here, especially the unlimited options in the Yukata Buffet. And the Kawaii Kabuki Show is such an amazing visual spectacle that you don’t have to be a Hello Kitty fan to both enjoy and appreciate it.

How Many Hours Do You Need in Sanrio Puroland?

Although it only boasts two family-friendly rides, Sanrio Puroland has a host of other attractions, including cafes and restaurants, walk-through photo attractions, shows and parades, and character meet opportunities. To fit all of these things in comfortably, I recommend that you spend around 4 hours in Sanrio Puroland.

How Far is Sanrio Puroland From Tokyo Disney?

The distance between Sanrio Puroland and Tokyo Disney Land is 60 km. The road distance is 51.1 km. But very few people choose to travel between the two parks by road, as the train and metro system in Japan is so convenient. Allow around an hour and a half to two hours to travel between Sanrio Puroland and Tokyo Disney by public transport.

Can You Take Photos in Sanrio Puroland?

Not only can you take photos in Sanrio Puroland, taking photos in Sanrio Puroland is actively encouraged! When you’re exploring the park, or walking around the walk-through photo spots, you can take your own photos. If you choose to book appointment for character encounters or visit the Lady Kitty House, a staff member will take a photo of you with the characters using your camera. They will also take a professional photo that you can purchase if you wish. It’s worth noting that the staff members will officially only take one photo of you and your group. You can’t request a second photo, or different group configuration.

What Is Sanrio Puroland Known For?

Sanrio Puroland is the home of Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pompompurin, and all of their other Sanrio friends. Sanrio Puroland is best known for its commitment to kawaii (cute) with every area of the indoor park adorned with all things adorable. It is a fully immersive and fully indoor theme park experience. It isn’t known for its rides, but for its insta-worthy photo opportunities, character encounters, and great range of themed foods.
