Visiting The Scottish Deer Centre In Fife. Is It Worth It?
The Scottish Deer Centre is a beautiful nature-based wildlife park and zoo. It covers 55 acres, and is home to a huge number of animals, and not just deer! You’ll also find wolves, bears, lynx, Scottish wildcats and birds of prey.
But it’s the deer that are the stars of the show here. The Scottish Deer Centre is home to the world’s largest collection of deer! And if you’re visiting with kids, you’ll also find playgrounds, indoor and outdoor play areas, and other things to see and do.
So is the Scottish Deer Centre worth visiting? Here’s everything you need to know:

Where Is The Scottish Deer Centre?
The Scottish Deer centre is located in the Fife countryside of Scotland.
The full address for your sat nav is: Bow of Fife, Cupar, Fife, KY15 4NQ, Scotland
The Scottish Deer Centre is around an hours drive from Edinburgh and an hour and half away from Glasgow. Public transport links are a little tricky, so I would recommend driving if possible.
How Much Did The Scottish Deer Centre Cost?
There is no set entry price to visit the centre. The park operates a ‘pay what you can’ system and no amount is too big or too small. We chose to pay £10 per person, but you could pay more or less if you wish.
That seemed like about the right amount for the things to see and do on the site. It was enough to fill a couple of hours, but if you had smaller children then you could spend the whole day in the playgrounds and enjoying the activities.
Top Tip: The bags of deer food cost £3.50 each and you have to buy these as you pay to get into the centre. Please get one! Feeding the deer was the highlight of the whole experience for all of us. They were very food motivated and were very gentle with the boys…although they were a bit rough with each other, fighting to be at the front of the queue for the grub!
Note: The Center also offers tractor/trailer rides during the summer months. There is a set charge of £3.50 per person for this.
What Animals Are At The Scottish Deer Centre?
As the name suggests, the most abundant animals at the Scottish Deer Centre are deer! Axis deer, fallow deer, muncjac, white lipped deer, the list goes on and on.
The Scottish Deer Centre has the largest number of deer in captivity of any park in the world, so if you’re looking for somewhere to get up close to, and feed, deer then there’s nowhere better in the world.
Outside of the deer family, the focus here is on animals that are, or were, native to Scotland. We loved seeing the wolves, who put on a real show for us, basking in the sun and patrolling their enclosure.
We also spotted a pair of friendly otters, and some beautiful highland cattle, which made us all smile as they were the boys granny’s favourites. And the ‘raptor world’ bird of prey centre was abundant with birds, which we got to see up close and personal.
Unfortunately the weather was a little against us, and the time of year. We didn’t see the brown bear (they were already hibernating) or the wildcats. But we were still very happy with the animals that we did see, and especially with the interaction that we had with them.
I’m not a big fan of zoos, especially if their enclosures seem too small. But the animals here had plenty of space and plenty of enrichment. They seemed very happy in enclosures that were effectively their own, natural habitat.
What Activities Were At The Scottish Deer Centre?
As well as the animals to see, there was SO much for the boys to do here. They raced around the go karting track, played on the huge playground, took a woodland walk through the tall trees, fed the deer, bounced on giant inflatable pillows and then ended their visit on another playground.
My boys are aged 11 and 8 and these activities were suitably sized and age appropriate for both of them. They both particularly loved the giant bouncing pillow, which was enormous. And because the Scottish and English half terms aren’t in the same week, they had the whole thing to themselves!
If you’re travelling with younger kids than mine there was even more for them to do. Indoor play areas, smaller play areas, and an indoor ride on area with tractors and little tykes-type cars.
We visited during Halloween, so there were character photo points and a small pumpkin patch with mini wheelbarrows where kids could role play. There is also a dino digging sandpit experience, but this was closed for renovation on the day we visited.
Halloween has quickly ended, and if you visit now they’ve turned things around for Christmas, with Christmas-themed activities and a grotto where kids can meet santa. The grotto experience is prebookable and costs £16.95 per child.
Would I Recommend Visiting?
Absolutely! I would definitely recommend visiting the Scottish Deer Centre, especially if you want to visit with kids. It is such a fun day out, and a great chance for the boys to run around, get some fresh air, and we really loved the deer. Feeding them was an absolute highlight of the day for all of us. But there was so much to see and do, and more playground areas than we were expecting.
I also love the concept of the ‘pay what you can’ system because it means that everyone can afford to have a good day out. I wish more places would implement a system like this, effectively allowing families that can afford to pay a little extra to do so for families that can’t.
