Universal CityWalk Osaka With Kids: Shops, Restaurants and Our Family Favourites

Universal CityWalk Osaka is one of those places you almost can’t avoid on a trip to Universal Studios Japan: it’s the shopping and restaurant area between Universal City Station and the park, so you have to walk straight through it if you’re using public transport to visit USJ.

We’ve walked through it plenty of times with our boys on our way to and from the park. We always have a peek (and usually buy merch we don’t need) from the Universal Store on our way into the park, and we often stop for a meal after a long day in USJ too.

Universal CityWalk Osaka With Kids Shops, Restaurants and Our Family Favourites

If you’ve visited Universal Parks in Orlando or California, then you’ll notice that Universal CityWalk Osaka is smaller than its American counterparts. Universal CityWalk Hollywood covers 390,000 square feet, and Universal CityWalk Orlando covers a whopping 30 acres. By contrast, Universal CityWalk Osaka is just a 100 metre long outdoor shopping and dining promenade. But it’s still worth exploring.

Universal CityWalk Osaka is especially handy for families like ours because it has a SevenEleven where you can buy last-minute park bits, or pick up a snack. It’s also a great place to have a proper dinner without travelling back into central Osaka. You can even visit CityWalk even if you’re not spending the day inside Universal Studios Japan, and there are great shops to enjoy too.

In this guide, I’m sharing the highlights of Universal CityWalk Osaka, and the places we genuinely enjoy eating and shopping. From the brilliantly located Gap Factory Store to the huge Universal Studios Store, and even our favourite affordable family-friendly dining options, here’s everything you need to know:

What Is Universal CityWalk Osaka?

Universal CityWalk Osaka is a shopping and dining complex beside Universal Studios Japan. It’s also the first glimpse of Universal that you get if you arrive by train at Universal City Station. On our first trip to USJ we were so excited when we saw those giant, brightly coloured billboards that line the street alongside CityWalk.

The city walk area in Universal Studios Japan

Universal CityWalk Osaka has restaurants, snack stops and shops spread over 5 main levels. Most of the shops are on the first two levels, but it’s worth looking beyond the main walkway if you’re deciding where to eat.

It’s important to know that CityWalk is outside the theme park gates. That means don’t need a Universal Studios Japan ticket to visit the shops or restaurants here. This is so handy if:

  • You’re staying in a Universal Studios hotel and need somewhere to shop, eat, or relax but aren’t going into the park.
  • You want to stop for a meal before or after a long park day.
  • You want to buy Universal Studios souvenirs, but you don’t want to buy a park ticket, because you’re not planning to go into the park.

You will, of course, need a separate park ticket if you want to go into Universal Studios Japan. Also bear in mind that an ordinary USJ admission ticket generally does not permit you to leave the park and re-enter the same day (which means, sadly, you can’t pop out for lunch). That’s why we treat CityWalk as a before-or-after-the-park stop. It also means that if you stop in CityWalk at park closing you’ll find huge crowds, a bustling atmosphere….and long waits for the best restaurants!

Is Universal CityWalk Osaka Worth Visiting With Kids?

Yes, Universal CityWalk Osaka is well worth visiting with kids, and has been designed to be family-friendly. I wouldn’t plan an entire Osaka day around it though; in my opinion, it’s a nice addition to a Universal Studios Japan day, rather than a day out in its own right. But I do think it’s worth allowing time to explore CityWalk, not just rushing straight past it on your way between the station and the park gates.

Although it’s often underestimated, I think CityWalk Osaka offers two useful things for families that are more important than you might think: a choice of meals (Western and Asian) after an exhausting theme park day and shopping options that my boys actually want to browse. I can’t overemphasise how much we appreciate CityWalk being there at the end of a visit, when we’re too tired to travel across Osaka in search of dinner but still want to make the evening feel like part of the holiday. It still has great holiday vibes.

You can keep it cheap with a simple meal or a snack, or splurge a little on shopping and sit-down restaurants.

Our Favourite Shops at Universal CityWalk Osaka

Gap Factory Store: My Personal Favourite

This is probably an unexpected favourite in a Universal Studios Japan guide, but just I love the Gap Factory Store here! Because it’s a factory store they always have great deals and discounts, and I always pick up new clothes for myself and the boys whenever we visit. Even if the boys do grumble a bit after a long park day!

One of the things that makes this branch special is its customisation station. You can choose embroidery, prints or patches for eligible items bought there, so a piece of clothing can become a much more personal Osaka souvenir. I particularly love the Japan and Osaka designs we’ve seen: they’re something the boys might actually wear again at home, rather than another souvenir that ends up in a drawer.

Universal Studios Store: For Park Souvenirs

There’s also a large official Universal Studios Store in CityWalk. We always arrive at the park before it’s open (my type A personality means we’re early for everything) so we have time to pop here on our way into the park. It’s a fun place to browse themed clothes, character gifts and souvenirs, whether you’re building excitement before your park day or making one last purchase on the way back to the station. If you’re going to buy headbands, hats, or outfits, buy them here on the way in, then you get to wear them all day!

We particularly like having the option to browse when we aren’t trying to squeeze in another ride. Shopping before the park opens feels like an added bonus, rather than taking time away that the boys would rather spend in the park!

Where to Eat at Universal CityWalk Osaka With Kids

We’ve eaten around the Universal City area across several trips. What works best for your family will depend on your energy levels and budget, but the good news is that there’s a good mix of cuisines available, including familiar fast food restaurants that fussy kids will recognise (yup, I’m talking about McDonalds).

City Food at Universal CityWalk, Osaka, Japan

After a full USJ day, my needs are pretty small: my ideal restaurant has seats, food the boys will enjoy, and a short journey back to our hotel!

For Osaka Food: TAKOPA

If you want something that feels more distinctly Osaka than an international chain, look at TAKOPA, CityWalk’s takoyaki area. Several takoyaki sellers are gathered together, so it’s a convenient place to try this local speciality or grab a snack. It could be a fun stop if your kids like trying unfamiliar food; if they’re less keen, there are plenty of other options nearby.

For a Cheap Family Meal Nearby: Saizeriya

I know it’s not haute cuisine, but one of our practical favourites is Saizeriya. If you have never eaten at this Japanese Italian restaurant chain, it’s a useful option when you want a casual, inexpensive meal with children. We’ve eaten at the Universal City branch (and branches all over Japan, if i’m being honest) and the simple, affordable menu makes it an easy choice when everyone is tired and hungry. There’s something for even the fussiest kids here!

You’ll find it beside the CityWalk area, on the same route between Universal City Station and the park.

Hard Rock Cafe: For a Bigger Sit-Down Meal

Yes, there is a Hard Rock Cafe at Universal CityWalk Osaka, on the fourth floor, and it’s the first restaurant you’ll see as you’re leaving the park. If you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal and American-style restaurant atmosphere after your park day, it’s definitely an option worth considering. We ate here on our first visit to Japan, and it was so welcome for the boys, who were getting rice and noodle fatique at that point, and wanted something familiar.

Of course, these aren’t the only restaurants available in Universal CityWalk Osaka.  See the current CityWalk restaurant directory for details.

My tip: This ones from first-hand experience when we were travelling with much younger boys. If your children need to eat at a particular time, decide on dinner before leaving the park. It’s much easier to choose a restaurant while everyone is still cheerful than when four people are standing outside USJ, exhausted and hungry!

Practical Tips for Visiting CityWalk Osaka

● Allow extra time if you’re taking the train to USJ. CityWalk is between Universal City Station and the park, and there are plenty of tempting distractions along the way. If you’re going to want to peek in those shops, arrive a little early!

● Check the individual shop or restaurant hours. CityWalk has different typical hours for its various levels, and individual businesses can vary. We found that very few of the restaurants open for breakfast, for example. You can find the current details on the official CityWalk website.

● Remember that CityWalk is outside the park. An ordinary USJ ticket generally doesn’t allow re-entry after you leave, so plan your CityWalk meal for before you go in or after your park day.

● Travelling with a baby? There’s a nursing room on the third floor, near the west-side toilets.

● Staying nearby? CityWalk is especially convenient when you have a Universal City hotel. You can have dinner here without another train journey after a long park day.

Hotels on Universal City Walk Osaka

Another huge reason why Universal CityWalk is so important is because 5 of the official Universal Studios Japan hotels are directly on Universal City walk. You won’t have a long commute between your hotel and the park or between your hotel and the shops and restaurants of CityWalk, perfect for families that are looking for a fully immersive stay inside the Universal bubble.

Universal CityWalk Osaka FAQs

Do you need a USJ ticket to visit Universal CityWalk Osaka?

No, there’s absolutely no ticket required to visit Universal CityWalk Osaka, and you don’t even need to have plans to enter the park. CityWalk sits outside of Universal Studios Japan, so you can visit its shops and restaurants without a park ticket. I’m sure a lot of people who live nearby do just that when they fancy something fun for dinner! You do need a valid ticket to enter USJ itself.

Where is Universal CityWalk Osaka?

Universal CityWalk Osaka sits right between Universal Studios Japan and Universal City Station. If you’re arriving at the station for a park day (and that’s how must people get to the park, including us) you’ll walk through the area on your way to the gates.

Is Universal CityWalk Osaka worth visiting without a park ticket?

It can be, especially if you’re staying nearby, want to browse the Universal Studios Store or fancy food around the resort. This is a great place to buy Universal merch, which makes great souvenirs, especially for kids. But if you have limited sightseeing time in Osaka and aren’t visiting USJ, though, I wouldn’t put it ahead of the city’s bigger neighbourhoods and attractions.

Final Thoughts and Further Reading

Universal CityWalk Osaka is a genuinely useful part of a Universal Studios Japan trip with kids. It’s not a stand a lone destination, in my opinion at least, but it definitely enhances the USJ experience. We’ve been through it enough times that it now feels like part of our USJ routine: a little shopping, a look at the Universal merchandise and somewhere easy to eat after the park.

For me, the Gap Factory Store is the unexpected highlight, especially if the boys spot a custom design they want to take home. If you want something unique, this is where to buy your souvenirs. And when we’re watching the budget, it’s good to know Saizeriya is nearby for a simple family meal. You don’t need to make CityWalk the main event, but I definitely wouldn’t rush past it.
