Pokemon Room Review: MIMARU Tokyo Kinshicho. Our Honest Family Review From 2026
If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo with kids and have even the slightly hint of a Pokémon fan in you’re family, you’ve probably already come across the famous Pokémon-themed rooms at the MIMARU Aparthotels across Japan. There are 10 MIMARU hotels in total that offers these rooms. I saw these on Instagram and I knew it would make my boys wild with happiness. So we booked the Pokémon themed room at the MIMARU Tokyo Kinshicho for two nights.
We stayed here as part of our month long Japan trip, and honestly, this was one of those hotel experiences that immediately justified itself the moment we walked into the room. It looked epic. And as we expected, the boys lost their minds. They were so excited.

But it is actually worth booking? And more importantly, should you prioritise this hotel over others when you’re putting together your Tokyo itinerary? From the perspective of Pokémon crazy kids, and not-so-interested in Pokémon parents, here’s our honest review:

First Impressions: The Pokemon Magic Is Real
My boys are huge Pokémon fans: From buying and selling card in Akihabara, to visiting the Pokémon Centers in every single city we visited, Japan means Pokémon to them. So I decided this hotel would be the perfect surprise for our last two nights in the country.
The moment we opened the door, the room does exactly what it promises. It feels like stepping into a Pokemon World.
From the large Snorlax plushie on the bed to the Pokémon blankets, the wall artwork, and the subtle design details throughout the room, its fully immersive without ever feeling cluttered or gimmicky. And from a practical parent perspective, this room is huge! One of the biggest we’ve stayed in in Japan, with plenty of space for everyone to move around, and wardrobe so big all four of our suitcases fit in the bottom of it.
But it was the kids reaction that made this room worth the money, and told me everything I needed to know. This isn’t just a hotel room. It’s the cherry on top of the perfect Tokyo Pokémon experience.

Location: Kinshicho (An Underrated Spot That’s Brilliant For Families)
We looked at several different MIMARU locations, and if I’m being totally transparent, we chose Kinshicho because it was one of the cheapest. What we didn’t expect was that we’d love this location so much, we’d decide to stay here next year too!
MIMARU Kinshicho isn’t in the middle of Shinjuku or Shibuya, but that might be a good thing if you’re travelling with kids. It was quiet at night, just one stop on the Metro from Akihabara (which is where the boys wanted to spend most of their time) and close to the Tokyo Skytree. You could either walk or take one stop on the metro! We did exactly that, and you can read our full Tokyo Skytree review here.

We liked it here because of the:
- Easy train access into central Tokyo
- Close to parks and a large playground, which meant we always had something the boys could run off steam. The closest park in Kinshi Park, and you can read about this here.
- Shops, restaurants and convenience stores nearby (we could actually see 3 convenience stores from the hotel window!)
- A very family-friendly pace compared to the chaos of staying in a central spot
This felt like a great base, and even without the extra excitement of the Pokemon room, it’s a location we will definitely choose again.
Room setup: Designed for Families
Having looked at other room types in our MIMARU hotel, we found that one thing MIMARU does really well as a brand is space. And that matters in Tokyo, where hotel rooms tend to be tiny. Especially when you’re a family of four with a teen and a pre-teen who need space apart every now and again.

The Pokémon room we stayed in comfortably fit our family of four, with:
- Separate sleeping areas. There were actually 4 single beds pushed together to make 2 doubles, but these were easy to separate so the boys had their own beds.
- Plenty of space for luggage. All four of our large cases fit in the base of the huge open wardrobe (though it could have used more coat hangers!)
- A small kitchenette where I made breakfast every day, but you could have easily made simple meals here too. Like a nod to the Pokemon Cafe, but without the expense: A great way to save money!
- Thoughtful storage solutions, which would have been so handy for a longer stay.
For Japan, where space is often tight, this felt genuinely practical rather than just themed.

What Makes the Pokémon Room Special?
I gave a lot of thought to answering this question, because even I was impressed with the Pokemon details, but couldn’t really put into words why. This isn’t just a few decorations slapped on a standard hotel room.

The experience includes:
- Pokémon-themed bedding and décor. The particular highlight is the Snrolax, which my boys fought over being able to sleep with!
- Exclusive in-room artwork. We turned this into a game with the boys counting the Pokemon (one things there are 98, the other says 100)
- Pokéball design features throughout, including on the crockery, so even breakfast felt like a treat!
- Free in-room gifts. We were given a MIMARU exclusive Pokemon laundry bag, cosmetics bag, and draw string bag as a gift to take home.
- A real sense of “Pokémon stay experience” rather than just branding
It’s subtle in places, but that actually makes it feel higher quality.
How to book (and why we recommend Klook)
We booked our stay through Klook, which made the whole process straightforward and easy to manage alongside the rest of our Japan itinerary. We love using Klook because it’s so easy, we can book in our own currency, and the prices are always so good.
If you’re planning multiple Japan experiences (hotels, transport, attractions), I think it’s worth keeping everything in one place for simplicity.

(We always recommend booking early. The Pokemon rooms aren’t usually released until 3 months before you visit and they go so fast. In fact, these Pokémon rooms are some of the fastest-selling themed stays in Tokyo.)
Is it worth the price?
This is the big question. We are what I call ‘mid-range’ travellers. We don’t stay in hostels, but we don’t often plump for luxury either. Paying for this room was a splurge for us, as a special treat for our kids. And for us, it’s one that was worth it. So is it worth it for you?

Pokémon rooms at MIMARU are not cheap, and they do sell out quickly. Every Pokemon fan in Japan wants to get their hands on one of these rooms, especially in peak travel seasons. We stayed for 2 nights and we paid £717.74 (in total) for our stay, travelling as a family of four in April 2026.
If you can’t decide if it’s the right choice for you, here’s how I’d look at it:
- If you’re just looking for a base in Tokyo: there are cheaper options. In fact, I would recommend looking at a non-Pokemon room at the MIMARU as these are more affordable, but still a good siz and location.
- But if you have Pokémon fans in your family: this will become a highlight experience of your trip
For us, it wasn’t just accommodation, it was part of the Japan memories for our boys. We turned this into a two day Pokemon fiesta, where they got to do all the Pokemon activities they’d ever dreamt of, and they really did have the time of their lives.

Final verdict: should you stay here?
Yes! Absolutely! But only if Pokémon matters to your family. If you’re kids don’t know who Pikachu is? Save your money!
Our boys love Pokemon, so they loved every single mintue. For them, this isn’t just a themed hotel room, it’s a genuinely memorable experience that added something special to their Tokyo trip.
However, it works best as:
- A once-in-a-trip splurge. We’ve done it now. And as much as they boys loved it, we probably won’t splurge again: we’ll try something new instead
- Part of a wider Pokémon itinerary (check out our Tokyo Pokémon experiences guide)
- Something you book early to avoid disappointment
For Pokémon fans, it’s one of those “we’re glad we did it” stays, and it will definitely give you bragging rights with your friends. And for kids? I can only speak for my boys, but I can’t tell you that this is the one hotel we’ve stayed in that they’ll definitely remember for the rest of their lives.
