Sanrio Puroland Tokyo With Kids – How To Book, What to Expect and Travel Tips
I am an unashamed, life-long,Hello Kitty fan. That cute, kawaii cat has got my heart! So the chance to see Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pompompurin, and a host of other Sanrio characters all in one place was just too good to resist. Which is why Sanrio Puroland with kids was my dream come true.
Located in Tama City, Tokyo, Sanrio Puroland is a 35 minute train ride from Tokyo station and then a 5 minute walk from Tama Center Station. You can’t miss it, thanks to its colourful exterior.

If you travel to Sanrio Puroland this way then take some time to explore the station! The roof (above) is decorated in the style of stain glass and covered in Sanrio characters. You’ll find Sanrio details everywhere here, and its worth 5 minutes of your time to check it out!
When you finally get to Sanrio Puroland there are 2 rides, parades, shows, character meets, and amazing themed food options too. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Sanrio Puroland:

Why Visit Sanrio Puroland With Kids
Sanrio Puroland is a riot of colour and a real sensory overload. The atmosphere is vibrant, and because of the theme of the park, you’ll find pastel colours, kawaii characters, and floral motifs everywhere.
You’ll need to get a ticket if you want to meet any of the Sanrio characters (these tickets are free) but do this early, as they go quick. The collection spot is quite hidden away, but you’ll find it to the right of the My Melody Drive ride.
It’s worth noting that you need to get a QR code to meet a character and these are allocated one per device, not one per family! So if you’re travelling in a group make sure you can all access the Wifi so that you can get more character meets under your belt.
We met Dear Daniel (who was lovely!) because at 11am these were the only tickets left for the day. We would have preferred Pompompurin or Hello Kitty, so we’ll learn this lesson for the next time we visit!

Sanrio Puroland Kawaii Kabuki Show
I also recommend strongly booking tickets for the Kawaii Kabuki. You don’t need a ticket to watch this show, but ticket holders can sit in the first three rows and don’t have to stand in the long queue to enter the theatre. Because the show is so popular, this was well worth the additional 1,000 yen (£5.08 )extra for us. This is the per person per ticket price. You can book this from the ticket stand on the first floor once you’re in the park.
Even if you don’t prebook the puropass early access tickets, PLEASE don’t miss the Kawaii Kabuki! It is frankly insane! A riot of colour with all of the Sanrio characters (including my favourites Hello Kitty and Pompompurin) alongside incredibly talented actors putting on a Kawaii take on a traditional kabuki play. One of the weirdest and best things i’ve ever seen – don’t miss it!

Rides At Sanrio Puroland
There are only two very gentle rides in the whole park: the first is a boat ride that takes you through the whole universe of Sanrio characters called Sanrio Character Boat Ride and the second is a car ride themed around My Melody called Mymeroad Drive. Both rides are suitable for all ages.
TOP TIP – Because there are only two rides the queues for these can get long (upwards of 2 hours) especially during peak periods like Cherry Blossom season. But Sanrio Puroland offers a fast pass system called Puropass that is cheap and hardly anyone knows about it! You can use it for the two rides and to meet Hello Kitty in the Lady Kitty house. It costs ¥500 (£2.56) per person per ride or ¥1,000 (£5.18) per ride for a family pass for up to 4 people.

You buy the passes from an automated machine, and these are located next to the ride entrance, but they’re so unassuming that no one seemed to be using them or no they were there. I’ve added a photo above so you know what you’re looking for. We used these for ALL the attractions and saved ourselves HOURS of queue time!
The rest of the activities in Sanrio Puroland are beautiful photo shoot back drops and walk throughs. It’s very well organised and each backdrop has been wonderfully well done. They also don’t take too long to navigate, which is good news when you’re travelling with a pair of impatient boys like I was!

Sanrio Puroland is suited to both kids and adults, but realistically you do need to have at least a passing interest in Sanrio to enjoy it. The boys were definitely humouring me and my love for it all, but wouldn’t have visited on their own.

It’s also not a full day out. We left at around 3pm, having experienced everything the site had to offer.
How To Book Sanrio Puroland Tickets
Sanrio Puroland is one of the most affordable theme park attractions in Tokyo. A one-day ticket costs just £19.85 per person. I recommend you book your tickets in advance, as on the day tickets are not only more expensive, they’re also not always available.

We booked our tickets with Klook because you can book them well in advance (which suits my type A personality!) Tickets booked now can use used right up until 31st September 2026.

We found that booking with Klook saved us time and money: we could scan our tickets from our phone and walk straight in as soon as the park opened. Honestly, visiting Sanrio Puroland is worth every penny. We’ve now visited three times, and if I can convince the (much less enthusiastic) boys then we’ll be going again on our next trip too!
Best Time To Visit Sanrio Puroland
The best time to visit Sanrio Puroland (as with any theme park-type attraction in Japan) is on a weekday, and I advise you to get to the park before it even opens for the quietest possible experience.

The park opens at 9.30am, but we arrived just before 9am to get into the queue to get into the indoor theme park. The queue at this time looked long, but it moved really quickly. Once we were inside, this meant that there were no real crowds for the first part of our trip.
The two rides (The Sanrio Character Boat Ride and My Melody Drive) both had no queues at all: in fact, we rode the boat ride twice back to back without waiting and then went on the My Melody ride with a 10 minute wait time. All within the first 30 minutes of arriving in the park.

In the afternoon, there were queues of over 2 hours for both of these rides on the day of our visit!
So my top tip is to arrive early and visit the rides quickly, then you can spend the rest of your time exploring, visiting the photo spots, and watching the shows and parades that take place in the park throughout the day.
Because its so photogenic and beautiful, most people seemed to be stopping and taking photos of everything rather than going to the rides and I can see why this would be tempting. But it’s not the most efficient use of your time.
Sanrio Puroland Food And Souvenirs
The best parts of visiting Sanrio Puroland? The food, drinks, and souvenirs! Are they overpriced? Absolutely! Are they worth every penny? Yes. They’re so cute that, frankly, they’re irresistible.

You can eat in the character food court, which is a quick service restaurant with plates themed around different Sanrio characters. The Sanrio Rainbow World Restaurant is similar, set up like a food court with different zones organised by colour and by character.
We chose to eat in the Restaurant Yakata which is a buffet restaurant where you can choose your own dishes.

The restaurant has a stage and at regular intervals the characters came out to dance on the stage as well as to pose for photos. This was awesome, and saved queuing to meet characters elsewhere.
The food was also really good here and the buffet style meant there was something for everyone. Both Japanese and Western style dishes were served here.

This restaurant gets BUSY and is often full. You are allocated a number when you check in and sit and wait for your number to be called (bingo style) but we arrived 5 minutes before the restaurant opened so we would be one of the first families into the restaurant, and we didn’t have very much of a wait time.
This is a great tip for choosing this restaurant: arrive early, before it opens, so that you don’t have to queue for too long to get in. We then watched the Kawaii Kabuki show after lunch, before heading to explore the gift shops.

You could spend a fortune here if Sanrio is your thing, but I just picked up a souvenir keyring and a postcard. The perfect end to the perfect day!

FAQS
What age group is Sanrio Puroland best for?
The official verdict is that Sanrio Puroland is best for kids aged 3–10: in terms of the rides at least, it isn’t for teenagers looking for big thrills! But honestly? any Hello Kitty fan (including adults like me) will love it here. I’ve been twice – no regrets!
Most attractions are gentle, colourful, and themed for younger children — perfect for toddlers through to early primary school age. So if you have very young children don’t worry. This is a great place to take them.
Can I take a stroller into Sanrio Puroland?
Yes, strollers (buggies to us Brits) are allowed inside Sanrio Puroland. There’s also a designated stroller parking area near some attractions. However, it can get crowded and there are a lot of stairs in the park, so a compact stroller or baby carrier is often easier to navigate with. I would be leaving my buggy at home if I thought I could live without it!
Is there food available inside Sanrio Puroland?
Yes! In fact there are more restaurants and than rides and I think the fun themed food options are one of the best bits of the park! You’ll find character meals, kid-friendly bento sets, and sweet treats like cinnamon rolls and parfaits.
How long do you need at Sanrio Puroland?
Most families spend around 4–5 hours at the park. We spent 6 hours here on the visit when we didn’t have fast puropasses and 5 hours on the day when we did, but we also stopped for a long buffet lunch and watched the Kawaii Kabukii show (I know I’ve said it before, but please don’t miss this!)
If you want to do everything — parades, meet-and-greets, rides, and shop — plan for at least half-day. It’s all indoors, so it’s a great rainy day option too.
