We love Tokyo: but as well as being the perfect city in its own right, it’s also a great starting point for incredible day trips across Japan.
Many people visit Japan to explore the golden triangle (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) which is what we did on our first trip. Others will pick one city and explore it to its fullest (we spent two weeks in Tokyo on our last trip and we still haven’t seen a quarter of the things in the city we want to see).
But what if you want the best of both worlds? To stay in one city (without having to move hotels every two nights) and to see a much of Japan as possible at the same time? This is totally possible! You can explore Japan by staying in Tokyo and then taking the best day trips from Tokyo.

Mount Fuji Day Trip From Tokyo
By FAR the most popular day trip from Tokyo you can take is a Mount Fuji day trip.. These trips will take you out of the city and to a series of spots where you can see the best and most iconic views of the mountain.
It’s no coincidence that Mount Fuji is one of the symbols of Japan: it’s more than just a volcano, it’s also a sacred place where both Shinto and Buddhist religions believe it is a dwelling place for deities and spirits. That’s also one of the reasons why climbing to the top of Mount Fuji is so popular for Japanese people: it’s considered an important pilgrimage.
On this particular day trip, you’ll explore Oishi Park, which is known as the four-season painting of nature because it’s like stepping into a vivid and beautiful painting. Then stand by Lake Kawaguchi, known as one of the best Mount Fuji viewing spots.
The third stop on the trip will see you explore the clear spring water from the melting snow of Mount Fuji, known as the “100 Famous Waters of Japan”. The best stop on the tour (in my opinion!) is Arakurayama Sengen Park where you can stand on the (admittedly very crowded) observation deck, overlooking the majestic figure of Mount Fuji, and appreciate the wonders of nature. It’s worth fighting the crowds for!
Finally it wouldn’t be a Mount Fuji trip if you didn’t check in at the Lawson convenience store at the foot of Mount Fuji: such a Japanese concept to turn a kobini into a tourist attraction! It makes me laugh every time!

Private Mount Fuji Day Tour
If you want more flexibility, don’t like the idea of a tour bus, or money is no object, then you could consider a private full-day sightseeing tour to Mount Fuji and Hakone. The benefits of choosing a private tour is that you would have increased flexibility to plan your day, and you won’t have to share a coach with up to 100 other tourists.

I will say that you CAN visit Mount Fuji without taking a tour, but you won’t be able to visit many of these iconic spots and lakeside views by youself unless you choose to hire a car. For this reason, taking a tour is probably the best and the easiest way to see Mount Fuji, especially if you’re taing a day trip from Tokyo.
Hakone Day Trip From Tokyo
A Hakone day trip is one of the best and most tranquil day tours from Tokyo that you can take! There are a lot of Hakone day trips that also incorporate Mount Fuji, and if you are really short on time and need a whistle stop tour you could do this, but I think that each location deserves its own day (or realistically longer) if you can spare the time.
There are so many options for Hakone day trips (including another incredible private option if you’re not on a tight budget, which i’ve linked here) but one of the best is the Hakone and Gotemba Outlet One-day tour from Tokyo which both the beauty of Hakone as well as the a one of a kind shopping trip (don’t judge me too much, but I love a sneaky shopping trip)
You can admire the water torii on Lake Ashi up close, and take dreamy photos for online beauty with Lake Ashi as the background, then explore geothermal landscapes formed by ancient volcanic activity, and the famous black soft-boiled eggs
But what makes this Hakone day trip pretty unique is that your final stop is the Gotemba Outlet which is the flagship store of PREMIUM Outlet. It is the only store where you can shop while overlooking the panoramic view of Mount Fuji. Clothing + culture = perfect day trip!

Enoshima Beach, Kanagawa From Tokyo
If you’re looking for unusual day trips from Tokyo then I suggest you head to the seaside!
I might be biased, because I’ve said many times here that being by the sea is my favourite place in the world, but Enoshima Beach, Kanagawa is one of the very best (and underrated) unusual day trips from Tokyo.
You can take a day trip to Enoshima beach independently by hopping on the shinkansen from Tokyo. But as this post is all about easy day trips you can book online, i’ve found a no-hassle coach trip to Enoshima Beach that takes in ALL of the main sites with ease.
You can see the Great Buddha of Kamakura, Enoden (tram ticket included), Shonan Seaview in front of Kamakura High School, Enoshima walk, and the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Many of these attractions are particularly famous because of their appearance in iconic manga scenes, so if you’re a manga fan this is a must visit trip!
This day trip is priced at £32.29, which poses really good value as paying for the Shinkansen ticket would cost almost the same amount but without the convenience of a tour guide taking you from door to door.

Yokohama Day Trip From Tokyo
We haven’t actually visited Yokohama yet, but we have made plans to take a day trip to Yokohama from Tokyo on our next trip to Japan (which will be next April). And I think i’ve put together the most perfect Yokohama day trip itinerary! Yokohama was one of the first international ports in Japan and it is the second largest city in Japan after Tokyo.
The train to Yokohama from Tokyo only takes an hour (on the fastest route), so this is a really easy day trip! And train tickets cost between £5 and £30 per person, depending on the speed and route you choose, so it can be a really affordable day out too (check out shinkansen train tickets here)
What appeals to us about taking a day trip to Yokohama is it’s so easy to DIY and take everything at your own pace (we take coach trips when it makes sense and there’s no convenient way to travel on our own steam – like the Mount Fuji trip or when we visited the DMZ, but we do prefer to travel independently and at our own speed).
Once you get to Yokohama, there’s so much to see and do there! We are planning to visit the famous Cup Noodle museum (pre-book tickets here), then we’re visiting the seaside Minato Mirai district, which is where you can enjoy views from the top of the 296 metre tall Landmark Tower. In the evening we plan to go to China Town (yes, I did say China town in Japan!) because this area is huge: it’s actually the largest China Town in the world, outside of China, which beautiful lights for night photography and of course 100s of Chinese restaurants.
Nikko World Heritage Day Tour From Tokyo
The final spot in my roundup of day tours from Tokyo is the Nikko World Heritage Day Tour from Tokyo. This is a day trip that will pick you up for a meeting spot in Tokyo, then take you to some of the most beautiful attractions (making it one of the best trips for nature fans).
You’ll go to the Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then you’ll continue on to the Kegon waterfall which is one of Japan’s top three waterfalls. Your final stop will see you take a break by Lake Chuzenji at the foot of a volcano!
We haven’t experienced this tour yet, but it is on our hit list of tours we intend to visit on our next trip. I’ve got my eye on that waterfall! We keep adding weeks on to each visit we take, but we just never seem to spend enough time in Japan to do and see everything we want to do and see!

Skiing Day Trip From Tokyo
If you’re visiting Tokyo in the winter then one of the best day trips you can take is to hit the slopes and go skiing! Skiing in Japan is fantastic but sadly underrated: it’s also much more affordable than skiing in Europe or North America.
